One of the most decorated players in Titan history returned to his hometown as
Willie Green was back in Calihan Hall this week for his “Homecoming Camp,” hosted by the Willie Green Foundation.
The five-day camp started on Monday and ended on Friday with over 200 kids, ages 6-18, attending the event, held on the court that Green played his college ball on. The camp emphasized both individual and team skills with daily lessons in the morning and game scrimmages after that. The campers were also treated to special guests throughout the week in former Detroit Piston and current broadcaster Greg Kelser, ex-Titan and 76er Earl Cureton, three members of the Tuskegee Airmen and Benny White, a former Titan assistant coach, from the Mayor's office.
Green starred at UDM from 2000-03 and ended his college career fourth in school history with 1,779 points. A two-time All-Horizon League performer, Green was named the league's Player of the Year as a senior in 2003 after leading the conference in scoring at 22.6 points per game.
He went on to be selected in the second round, 41st overall, by the Seattle Supersonics, but was traded on draft night to the Philadelphia 76ers, the only team he has played for as he enters his eighth year in professional basketball. In his career, he is averaging 9.4 ppg., and shooting over 40 percent from the field. One of his best days in the NBA came on April 18, 2007, against the Toronto Raptors when he poured in a career-high 37 points connecting on 14-of-25 from the field, including five 3-pointers, also all career-bests.
The Willie Green Foundation (WGF) is a non-for-profit organization founded by NBA star and Detroit, Michigan native, Willie Green. The overall mission is to enrich as well as strengthen the academic, athletic, cultural, social, and career interests of the youth (and their families) who come from communities challenged by violence, economic underdevelopment, and chronic unemployment.
Although WGF is a relatively new foundation (established in 2006) the organization plans to meet its goals by raising money and awareness for programs that will identify and 'positively' exploit the often, overlooked human potential of those youth identified as "at-risk" and prepare them to be successful and progressive thinking leaders in the areas of business, government, politics, education, and entrepreneurship. We also plan to re-assess certain sectors of a community that are considered "lost" or "abandoned" with the intention of creating businesses and or jobs that will offer members of the community hope and opportunities for economic development.
