YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Playing its third straight game in the Buckeye State, the Detroit Titans will look to get back to their winning ways when the red, white and blue visit conference foe Youngstown State on Saturday. Game time is slated for 4:35 p.m., at the Beeghly Center.
The game is part of a Titan road doubleheader with the men's team facing Youngstown State at 7:00 p.m. Fans can catch all the action on the Horizon League Network or view a live stats feed through YSUsports.com.
Detroit (8-9, 2-4 HL) has dropped three straight, all in conference action, but with a few breaks the Titans could have won all three. UDM has shown some great resiliency during the slide as it was behind by double-digits in all three games before coming back to nearly take the lead against Butler and Cleveland State, while possessing a two-point advantage with three minutes to go at Wright State.
Youngstown State (3-15, 1-6 HL) is coming off a tough 64-61 setback at home against WSU, a game in which the Penguins had a second-half lead and a chance to tie it at the buzzer.
DETROIT VS. YOUNGSTOWN STATE
It has been a close series for the most part, but by winning the last four meetings, the Titans have taken a 14-12 lead in the overall series. During the four-game winning streak, the Titans have scored at least 70 points in each game and are averaging 75.7 points during that span.
On the road, Detroit is 4-9 all-time against the Penguins.
ABOUT THE PENGUINS
A year after going 0-30, including 0-18 in the Horizon League, Youngstown State comes into the Saturday contest at 3-15, 1-6 in the HL. The Penguins had a pair of early wins posting back-to-back victories at home against Bucknell and Ohio. YSU also collected a conference win on the road, 61-55, at Valparaiso.
Brandi Brown leads Youngstown State in scoring (17.9) and rebounding (9.3). She also comes into the game as the leading scorer in the conference after tallying 23 against Wright State on Thursday. She also has eight double-doubles on the year.
GOOD NUMBERS VS. YSU
A few of the Titans have good career numbers against the Penguins.
Sophomore
Yar Shayok averaged 12 points and 10 rebounds in the two meetings last year, including a double-double at home with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Junior
Jalesa Jones is tallying 7.5 points, 4.2 assists and 3.6 rebounds in four career games, which includes a 16-point, seven-assist performance last year, while junior
Lauren Allen had 14 points, seven assists and five rebounds against YSU in Calihan Hall last season.
VALUE THE BALL
Detroit had just 10 turnovers - a season-low - against Butler on Jan. 8, and that was after turning it over just 12 times against Valparaiso on Jan. 6.
In the last four games, Detroit has turned it over at a rate of just 11.7 per game.
MAKE IT A DOUBLE
Sophomore
Yar Shayok collected a double-double for the second-straight game - and the third time in her last four games - with 11 points and a season-high 15 rebounds at Cleveland State.
Shayok now has five double-doubles on the year and 15 in her career. A list of her double-doubles is located on the next page.
CLEANING UP THE GLASS
Sophomore
Yar Shayok has now grabbed double-digit rebounds nine times this season, while collecting five or more on another seven occasions.
She dominated Western Michigan with a season-high 18 points and 13 rebounds. She pulled down a season-high 15 rebounds her last time out at Cleveland State, while corralling 14 boards at Michigan.
She is currently tied for second in the HL at 9.4 rebounds per game, a year after she was second in the conference at 9.7 rpg.
ANOTHER MARK FOR DIXON
Along with leading her team with 16 points at Cleveland State, sophomore
Dominique Dixon recorded a career-high seven rebounds and three steals.
LOOKING FOR THE THREE BALL
Detroit has attempted 20+ 3-pointers in six straight games, an average of 24.8 per game. That comes on the heels of not attempting 20+ treys in its first 11 games.
In the last six games, Detroit is shooting 30 percent (38-of-124) from behind the arc.
I LOVE CALIHAN BUT....
Sophomore
Dominique Dixon leads the Titans in scoring, but she has actually performed better on the road to this point then in the friendly confines of Calihan Hall.
In her 10 road games (she missed the Titans' contest at IPFW) the guard has posted seven games in double figures, including two 30-point contests as well as a 20-point game. She is averaging 14.9 ppg, on 43% shooting (55-of-127) and 41% from long distance (20-of-48).
In her six home games, Dixon is averaging 7.0 ppg., shooting 28% from the field (15-of-53) and just 20% from three (2-of-10). She also has just one double-digit scoring effort at home with 15 points in Detroit's last home event against Butler.
It should be noted that Dixon might be getting more comfortable at home since she is tallying 10.6 ppg., in her last three home games, compared to just 3.3 ppg., in her first three.
STARTING STREAKS
Junior
Jalesa Jones has made 53 consecutive starts at point guard for the Titans, while sophomore
Yar Shayok has been in the starting five in 48-straight games.
NEARLY A LONG DISTANCE RECORD
UDM attempted 29 3-pointers against Valparaiso on Jan. 6, just one away from tying a school record that has been set five times.
The 10 made triples against the Crusaders matched a season best as Detroit also hit 10 at Milwaukee.
PAIR OF TITANS IN THE TOP 100 IN TWO NCAA STATISTICS
The NCAA released its latest statistics on Monday, Jan. 17, and two Titans find themselves in the top 100 in the nation in two categories.
Sophomore
Yar Shayok is tied for 44th in the country in rebounding at 9.4 per game, while junior
Lauren Allen is 98th in Division I with a 1.5 assist-to-turnover ratio.
As a team, Detroit continues to take care of the ball turning it over just 15.9 times a game, 56th in the nation. It is also one of the least penalized teams committing an average of 16.0 fouls per game, which ranks 85th.
