YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio-- The Detroit Titans hung-on for a 73-69 win over host Youngstown State at the Beeghley Center Saturday night. Junior
Chris Blake netted a career high 20 points in the win.
Detroit's (11-10, 5-4 Horizon League) offense got going quickly, running up 18 points in the first 5:12 to mount a 10-point cushion. It would be the largest lead of the night for either school as the Penguins tallied seven first-half triples to get back into the game and the Titans held a slim 41-40 lead at the break.
Eli Holman nearly had a double-double in the first period alone, scoring nine points and grabbing nine boards in the opening 20 minutes.
Coming out of halftime, the Penguins (7-12, 1-8) scored the first eight points to grab their biggest lead at seven points. Detroit immediately answered with eight straight of its own, part of a 15-4 run. It was a closely-contested affair throughout the remainder of the game as it remained a one-possession game for most of the stretch run.
With 43.5 seconds remaining and Detroit clinging to a two-point lead, Blake and
Ray McCallum each made the back half of their free throw opportunities for a four-point Detroit lead. Kendrick Perry's triple with 18.4 left sliced the lead to a single point.
Nick Minnerath split a pair from the line and a Blake Allen missed three left the Penguins with just 2.3 seconds remaining and Blake on the line to try to ice it for Detroit.
He calmly sank both freebies and the Titans hung-on for a 73-69 win.
Four Titans were in double digits led by Blakes' 20, 14 for
Chase Simon, 12 for
Donavan Foster and Holman's 11. Holman also grabbed a season-high 16 rebounds and blocked four shots in the win.
Detroit will head to Wisconsin next weekend, battling Milwaukee on Friday and Green Bay on Sunday. Friday's game will televised nationally on ESPNU with tip slated for 9:00 p.m. Eastern.
Notes: Holman's double-double was his 10th of the season and 21st of his career ... Blake's previous season high in scoring was 15 (at Loyola and vs. Butler) ... Blake became the sixth different Titan to record 20+ points in a game this season (McCallum- 4, Minnerath- 3, Holman- 2, Calliste- 2, Simon-1, Blake- 1).
