ON TAP
The Titans fly over to Wisconsin this weekend, taking on Milwaukee on Friday night in a nationally-televised affair on ESPNU. Detroit will look to avenge an 84-81 overtime loss to the Panthers on New Year's Day. In that game, the Titans led by three in the closing seconds of regulation, but a desperation 30-foot three-pointer sent the game to an extra session. UDM will battle Green Bay on Sunday, a team it handled 79-56 at Calihan Hall on Dec. 30.
ABOUT MILWAUKEE
The Panthers are 10-11 overall and 5-5 in Horizon League play but have some big wins to their credit. Including the win over Detroit at Calihan Hall, Milwaukee recently swept the season series from Butler, a feat no HL team had accomplished since the 2004-05 season.
LAST MEETING
Junior
Nick Minnerath scored a career-high 21 points but it was not enough as visiting Milwaukee escaped with an 84-81 overtime win at Calihan Hall Saturday afternoon.
Ray McCallum's 35-footer at the buzzer hit just off the mark in the extra frame and the Panthers grabbed the Horizon League road win. Detroit had plenty of chances to win it and led by three in the final seconds of regulation but a furious comeback fueled Milwaukee's effort to get it to overtime and eventually win in the extra five minutes.
WHAT'S NEXT?
Detroit heads home for a quick three-game homestand, beginning on Feb. 3. The Titans host UIC on Thursday, the first of three games in five days. Saturday's tilt with Loyola is a televised contest (HL Game of the Week) and the stretch ends Monday night when Cleveland State invades Calihan Hall.
ELI MOVES UP TO EIGHTH IN BOARDS
Junior center
Eli Holman-- after two impressive rebounding games last week-- has returned to the nations top 10 in rebounding, ranking eighth in the most-recent release (Jan. 24). Holman grabbed a season-high 16 boards in the win at Youngstown State Saturday and has 14 games with double-digit rebounding total. He surpassed the 500 mark in his career (495 as a Titan) at Youngstown Saturday.
ALL IN THE FAMILY
Friday's game will be a rematch of the McCallums. Coach Ray and freshman guard Ray will try to avenge an earlier loss to J'Rob (Coach's nephew). In the Jan. 1 game, Ray outscored J'Rob 20 to 15 and had six assists.
NIFTY FIFTY
Junior
LaMarcus Lowe blocked one shot Saturday at Youngstown State, giving him 18 games with at least one block and giving him an even 50 for the season. Lowe is just two blocks shy of the century mark for his career (98).
AMONG THE NATIONAL LEADERS
Several Titans have their names appear among the NCAA Division I leaders in the Jan. 24 report. As the time of the release, junior
Eli Holman had 10 double-doubles, which ranked 14th through games of Jan. 23. He also was 8th in rebounds per game (10.9). #
LaMarcus Lowe# was 29th in the NCAA with his 2.4 blocks per game clip.
LEADING THE LEAGUE
Eli Holman leads the Horizon League in both offensive (3.8 rpg) and defensive (7.1 rpg) rebounds per game (10.9 total). He is also second in field goal percentage, connecting on 57.5 percent of his shots (88-of-153) and is 5th in blocks (1.6 bpg).
KEYS TO WINNING?
Every coach would love to have that magical formula that spells a win each time. While the following are not “magic”, there are some interesting trends to keep an eye on and how they equate to Titan wins:
*Detroit is 4-0 when
Donavan Foster scores in double figures.
*Detroit is 5-1 when
Evan Bruinsma scores.
*Detroit is 8-3 when
Ray McCallum records at least 5 rebounds.
*Detroit is 6-2 when it makes 70% of its FTs.
*Detroit is 11-1 when it leads with 10 minutes left in the game.
*Detroit is 11-0 when it reaches the 5-minute mark of the second half with the lead.
