DETROIT -- Just look at the numbers and it is easy to see why the Detroit women's golf team had a successful fall season. Three top-5 finishes. One tournament victory. 14 Titan players placing in the top 20 - with seven posting top-10 efforts - and a golfer taking home medalist honors twice.
“We did some good things out there and I was very happy with the fall and what we accomplished,” said head coach
Terri Anthony-Ryan. “We played four tournaments and everyone was able to play and contribute.”
Detroit won the Detroit Titans Fall Classic, setting two program records with a 287 in the final round and a 590 for the weekend. UDM also claimed third at the NIU Huskie Classic and tied for fourth at the Dayton Fall Invitational.
Without a question, the Titan who had the best fall was sophomore
Lindsey Lammers (Milan, MI/Milan). The second-year Titan was in the top 11 in all four events, winning at NIU and Dayton, while finishing runner-up at the Detroit Fall Classic. Even in the tournament that she tied for 11th, she ended up carding her career-best 54-hole total of 229 at the Redbird Invitational.
Lammers set a school record with a six-under 67 at the Detroit Fall Classic and ended the event with another school record and a 36-hole total of 140. Seven of her nine rounds of golf were in the 70's or lower as she ended the non-traditional season with a team-best 74.4 average.
“Just a great fall and a great way to get her name out there for the spring,” added Ryan.
Detroit had some great performances to back up Lammers. Freshman
Olivia Richards (Waterford, Ontario/Simcoe Compostie) played in three tournaments and had five of six rounds in the 70's – with three top-20 finishes – and was second on the team with a 77.3 average. If it wasn't for Lammers' school record 140, Richards would have set the record as she fired a 144 to take third in the Titans' home event.
“To get the results we got from Olivia as a freshman in her first few tournaments is simply great,” said Ryan. “How many freshmen in our history have come in and put up 70's.”
Junior's
Collette Hansen (West Olive, MI/Grand Haven) and
Allison Sears (Clio, MI/Powers) were right behind those two in average in the fall with an 80.5 and 82.4, respectively. Hansen had two top-10 marks, including a career-best 151 at the Detroit Fall Classic. Sears twice carded an 18-hole best 76 and tallied another career-high with a 244 at the Redbird Invitational.
“Collette was very steady for us and I look forward to seeing her improve and leading this team.” said Ryan. “Allison started the fall healthy and ready to make an impact and she did that for us.”
Senior
Liz Zouzal (Windsor, ON/Holy Names), junior
Danyelle Kauble (Grand Rapids, MI/Forest Hills Central) and sophomore
Christina Thorne (Kingston, ON/Bayridge) each had their moments throughout the fall. Zouzal played in three events and ended with her best tying for 14th at the Detroit Fall Classic. Kauble played in three tournaments in her first year with the team and ended her fall season with a career-best 74 in the home event, while Thorne saw action in all four fall events and was fifth on the team with an 83.2 average.
“All three played well and put in a lot of work this fall to get better,” said Ryan. “Liz is a senior who brings great leadership. Danyelle played well after just transferring in and Christina was much improved compared to her freshman year.”
Two other freshmen that surprised in their limited playing time were twins,
Jessica Mallender (Amherstburg, ON/General Amherst) and
Rebecca Mallender (Amherstburg, ON/General Amherst). Jessica fired back-to-back rounds in the 70's at the Detroit Fall Classic and finished her only event tying for 14th with a 156. Rebecca showed her improvement by taking 10 strokes off her opening round of collegiate golf and placing 27th in the same event.
“I was very pleased with the way they have performed since they got here. Jessica really showed that she can play and Rebecca came back to have a good day in just her second round of the fall,” stated Ryan.
The Titans will now focus on training and conditioning as they get ready for the spring. During the winter, Detroit will practice in the
Wayne Wheeler Titan Golf Practice Center, located right in Calihan Hall.
