Detroit Set For Exhibition Against Madonna

Live Stats

DETROIT -- It is not quite the start of the 2011-12 season, but it's getting closer as the Detroit women's basketball team will host Madonna in its lone exhibition of the preseason on Saturday. Tip-off is set for 4:30 p.m., inside Calihan Hall and is the first part of a basketball doubleheader with the men facing Madonna at 7:00.

Both games are FREE to all fans. Neither the women's or men's game will be on the Horizon League Network, but fans that can't make it out can follow all the action with live stats.

The women's game will also feature Alumni Day as a number of former players will be on hand and honored at halftime.

The Titans return seven letterwinners, while adding four talented newcomers to the team. Three starters return led by a senior backcourt in Lauren Allen and Jalesa Jones, along with second team All-Horizon League preseason selection in junior forward Yar Shayok.

Shayok is UDM's leading returning scorer at 9.3 ppg., while also topping the team and the conference in rebounding (10.2). Allen averaged 5.8 points, 3.6 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game as a junior, while Jones led the team with 3.6 apg. The Titans were picked to finish seven in the HL's preseason poll, but UDM did garner one first-place vote.

Madonna is located in Livonia and is a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). Nine upperclassmen and 12 letterwinners return for the Crusaders, who posted a 12-15 record a year ago, including a 7-9 mark in conference play.

Madonna was picked to finish fifth in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) preseason poll.  The Crusaders are led by junior center and All-WHAC preseason pick Kaylee McGrath, who led the team in scoring last season at 15.6 ppg., while also tying for the team lead in rebounds at 7.4.

The official start of the 2011-12 season will be on Nov. 11, when UDM heads to Indiana State for the opening game of the preseason WNIT.
