TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Despite a double-double in her collegiate debut from freshman Shareta Brown (Grand Blanc, MI/Grand Blanc) and a ferocious late rally, the Titans came up just short as Detroit fell, 64-62, at Indiana State in the opening round of the Preseason WNIT.

With the setback, the Titans will await word on their next opponents in the consolation bracket of the Preseason WNIT, held at a site to be determined from Nov. 18-20.

Brown was simply great for the Titans down low finishing with 25 points and 13 rebounds. She was 9-of-17 from the field and 7-of-10 from the line, and crashed the offensive glass coming up with eight boards.

The Titans were down by six, 64-58, with just under two minutes remaining when two free throws by Brown cut the deficit to four. Junior Demeisha Fambro (Detroit, MI/Crockett Tech) then came up with a steal and took it all the way to the rim and the red, white and blue were down by just two with 1:21 left.

Detroit had two opportunities to tie or take the lead in the final minute, but just could not get the golden basket. The final possession came after forcing an ISU three, which the Titans rebounded and called a timeout with 7.7 seconds left. After play resumed, UDM ran its offense, but could not get a final shot off.

Junior Chanahl Putnam (Almont, MI/Almont) had 10 points and four assists, while Fambro added nine off the bench. Senior Jalesa Jones (Detroit, MI/Pershing) ended the game with eight markers and four assists, while junior Yar Shayok (Ottawa, ON/Hillcrest) collected eight boards and three steals. Senior Lauren Allen (Rochester Hills, MI/Rochester) also had a good game totaling six points and five caroms.

Indiana State led by 11, 51-40, with 11:38 left in the game when the Titans started to make their run and it was Brown who led the charge. She pulled down an offensive board and netted a layup and then on the defensive side, she caused a steal and finished that with another offensive board and bucket. She was fouled on that play and completed the old fashioned three-point play to pull UDM within six, 51-45.

After the Titan defense held ISU scoreless on its next possession, Putnam hit her third 3-pointer of the game and Detroit was down by just three, 51-48, with 8:33 to go. Indiana State would reclaim a six-point lead a few times down the stretch, but the Titans kept fighting and again were down by three, 58-55, after Fambro nailed a trey with just over five minutes left on the clock.

The Titans outrebounded the Sycamores, who had two players start the game 6-foot-3 or taller, 40-24, including a 22-8 advantage on the offensive boards. The Titans also came up with 10 steals and had 19 second-chance points in the contest. Detroit attempted 17 more shots than ISU (59-42), but the Sycamores were 22-of-27 from the charity stripe compared to the Titans' 11-of-17 showing.

Detroit had an early lead in the game, 7-6, but ISU ran off eight-straight points to jump out in front. The Sycamores pushed their lead to as many as 11 in the first half, but UDM cut that down to four on three occasions before heading to the half down by six, 36-30.

Game Notes: Jones netted the first basket of the season for Detroit…The Titans are now 15-20 all-time in season openers and 2-2 under head coach Autumn Rademacher…The last time Detroit defeated a team from the Missouri Valley Conference was Southern Illinois, 73-62, on Nov. 27, 1997…This was the first time in the 35-year history of Titan women's basketball that Detroit opened the season in the Hoosier State…Indiana State has a Rademacher on its team in sophomore Andrea Rademacher, no relation to the Titan head coach, who finished with two points...The two-point margin was the narrowest out of all eight Preseason WNIT first round games.
