ON TAP
Detroit takes to the road for the first time this season, travelling to South Bend, Ind. for a battle with Notre Dame. The game is part of the 2011 Progressive CBE Classic which features 12 teams from across the country with Missouri, Notre Dame, California, and Georgia serving as the four Regional Round hosts. Play begins on Nov. 13. Each of the four Regional Round hosts will play two games on campus before advancing to the Championship Rounds, Nov. 21-22, at Sprint Center in Kansas City, Mo. Detroit will play at Bowling Green Nov. 21-23 in the Sub-regional Round.
ABOUT NOTRE DAME
The Irish will be without star Tim Abromaitis, who is forced to sit the first four games of the season due to a misunderstanding of redshirt rules dating back to his sophomore season. Notre Dame opened its season on Saturday at home against Mississippi Valley State and came away with an 80-67 win. Eric Atkins made 6-of-7 from the floor all 12 free throw attempts for a game-high 27 points for the Irish. Scott Martin added 15 points while Jack Cooley grabbed 10 rebounds.
WHAT'S NEXT?
Detroit returns home for another Friday night game against a non-Division I team-- Concordia University. The Cardinals call Ann Arbor, Mich. home and play at the NAIA level. UDM will then complete the Progressive CBE Classic with three games in three nights at Bowling Green Nov. 21-23. UDM battles George Washington on Monday, the host Falcons on Tuesday and close the trip with a Wednesday tilt against Austin Peay.
LAST TIME OUT
Chase Simon had 24 points while
Nick Minnerath added 23 as Detroit blew out Lake Erie, 95-57 on Friday night in the season opener for both teams. After a sluggish start, Detroit would later score 18 straight points, part of a 37-8 run to close the half. It was the first win in the season opener for the Titans since the 2007-08 campaign (61-60 vs. Kent State).
HELLO, OLD FRIEND
Detroit and Notre Dame-- while they haven't met since 1993-- have played 52 times previously. Notre Dame played each MCC (which later became the Horizon League) school in the mid-90s through a scheduling agreement with the league.
BIG EAST FAMILIARITY
Last year, Detroit also played a tough BIG EAST foe in the second game of the year. The Titans held a three-point halftime lead against 10th-ranked Syracuse at the Carrier Dome before eventually falling, 66-55, Nov. 16, 2010.
LOOKING TO SNAP THE STREAK
Notre Dame brings a 20-game home winning streak into Monday's game against Detroit. The string-- which included a perfect 17-0 campaign a season ago-- dates back to the 2009-10 season.
HEY, ROOMIE
Although Irish star Tim Abromaitis will not be playing, Monday marks a reunion for him and sophomore
Ray McCallum. The pair played and roomed together during the Team USA's World University Games trip to Shenzhen, China this summer. Team USA went 7-1 during the competition, taking fifth place.
SUPER SOPH
McCallum was honored as the Preseason Horizon League Player of the Year, becoming the first sophomore to gain that distinction. Last season, McCallum became the first UDM true freshman to be named to an All-Horizon League Team. He also grabbed the Newcomer of the Year Award from the HL, the fifth Detroit player to earn that honor. McCallum-- who was named an '11-12 Wooden Preseason Award Top 50 player and was tabbed to the Naismith Award Watch List-- led the team in scoring, assists and steals a year ago. The coach's son turned a busy summer schedule into a spot on the Team USA roster at the World University Games in Shenzhen, China. That squad finished fifth, competing against some of the top talent in the world.
SWEET LOU
Sophomore
Ray McCallum was recently named to a preseason 25-player watch list for the Lou Henson Award. The honor is bestowed on the top mid-major player in the country.
NO. 2 to BU IN PRESEASON POLL
Two-time national finalist Butler edged-out Detroit in the team predictions in the 2011-12 Horizon League Preseason Poll. The Bulldogs grabbed 28 first-place nods for 468 points in the preseason predictions submitted by league coaches, sports information directors and media. Detroit was just 15 points behind with 19 first-place nods while third-place Cleveland State (388) had a pair of top picks and Milwaukee (356) had the final first-place vote in a tightly-bunched group at the top of the standings. Valparaiso was fifth with 255 points with Green Bay close behind at 247 points. Youngstown State (195), Wright State (157), Loyola (145) and UIC (86) rounded-out the poll.
FEARSOME THREESOME
Three Titans were named to the 2011-12 Preseason All-Horizon League First Team:
Ray McCallum,
Chase Simon and
Eli Holman. The trio are the first teammates to all be on the first squad in the league's history. McCallum and Simon each scored 13.5 points per contest last year-- the highest returning scoring average in the HL-- while Holman was the league's top rebounder a year ago.
THE COUNTDOWN IS ON: 67
Chase Simon has 1,031 collegiate points to his credit with this being his thrid season in a Detroit uniform following his freshman campaign at Central Michigan. Simon's 933-point total in a Titan uniform leaves him in striking distance to soon become just the 35th Detroit player to reach the 1,000-point plateau at the school.
DICK VITALE COURT AT CALIHAN HALL TO BE DEDICATED DEC. 5
Dick Vitale, ESPN broadcaster, college basketball ambassador and former Titan head coach and athletic director, will be honored in December when the University of Detroit Mercy athletics department names its basketball court at Calihan Hall in his honor. Dick Vitale Court at Calihan Hall will be dedicated in conjunction with a nationally-televised event against Big EAST foe St. John's on December 5, 2011 with tip at 7:00 p.m. on ESPN2.
Vitale will be celebrating his 32nd anniversary of calling games for ESPN at the event. Vitale sat courtside for ESPN's first-ever NCAA basketball game – Wisconsin at DePaul on Dec. 5, 1979 (a 90-77 DePaul win). Since then, he's called close to a thousand games, including NBA contests for ESPN during the 1983 and '84 seasons.
