McCallum Named to Lou Henson Preseason All-America Team

25 players listed among preseason favorites for top mid-major player

DETROIT—University of Detroit Mercy sophomore guard Ray McCallum has been named to the 2011-12 Lou Henson Preseason All-America Team, according to an announcement by collegeinsider.com.  The Lou Henson Award is presented annually to the top NCAA Division I player at a Mid-Major conference school.

McCallum adds the honor to an already impressive preseason list of accolades.  The sophomore standout is the Horizon League's Preseason Player of the Year and was the preseason pick for top HL player by Lindy's.  He was also selected to the John Wooden Award Preseason Top 50 list, an award that chooses the top 50 returning players in all of Division I basketball.

McCallum led the Titans in scoring (13.5 ppg) and was among the nation's leaders in assists (161) as a freshman.   The coach's son parlayed a standout rookie season into invites at Deron Williams' and LeBron James' camps this summer.  He then worked a late invite to the Team USA tryout into a roster spot, impressing coaches and media along the way.  His USA squad finished fifth at the World University Games in Shenzhen, competing against some of the top talent in the world.

Rather than selecting a first, second, third team and honorable mention, the Lou Henson All-America squad is just one team.  The postseason award is named in honor of Lou Henson who retired after a spectacular coaching career that lasted 41 years. When he left the game in 2005 he was sixth all-time in career Division I wins with 779. He is the winningest coach at both Illinois and New Mexico State. He is one of only 12 coaches in the history of the game to take two schools to the Final Four.
