BOWLING GREEN, Ohio-- Sophomore
Evan Bruinsma provided a big spark with a career-best 17-point effort, but it was not enough as host Bowling Green defeated Detroit, 67-61 in the second day of the Progressive CBE Classic at the Stroh Center Tuesday night. Bruinsma got his opportunity after an early injury and foul trouble forced him to play 30 minutes off the bench.
After Nick Minnerath left the game with an injury early and Chase Simon picked up three personal fouls relatively quickly, someone needed to step up. Enter Bruinsma.
The sophomore played extended minutes in the first half and provided a huge lift, hitting on his first four shots for 11 points to go along with five rebounds in 13 minutes of work in the opening stanza.
A Ray McCallum basket gave the Titans their first lead, 22-20, with just over two minutes to go in the period. Detroit took a 27-26 lead into the break.
Trailing 34-31, the Falcons rattled-off eight quick points to regain control. The Titans would remain down until McCallum scored on a fastbreak layup for a 50-50 game with 7:19 to play.
After trading baskets, Cameron Black hit a jumper to give BGSU the lead for good. Jason Calliste scored on a nice reverse lay-in to make it 58-56 BGSU, but Craig Sealey threw down a dunk on the other end to regain momentum and keep the Titans at bay.
Down the stretch, BGSU salted the game away from the free throw line, hitting 7-of-8 in the final 39 seconds to hang on for the win.
Bruinsma's career night came on 7-of-10 shooting from the floor with seven rebounds, a block, a steal, an assist and no turnovers in 30 minutes. Calliste finished with 16 points and a career- and game-high nine rebounds.
Detroit (2-3) finishes the tourney Wednesday with a 5:00 p.m. tilt against Austin Peay State University. AP lost a tough 54-52 decision to George Washington in the day's earlier matchup.
Notes: After eight points tonight, Simon needs just 20 to reach 1,000 in a Titan uniform ... Bruinsma's previous career-best in points was nine vs. Concordia (11/18/11) ... Bruinsma has hit 14-of-24 (.583) shots from the field this season ... Calliste's previous high for rebounds in a game was seven at Syracuse last season (11/19/10) ... Tuesday was the first time Simon has failed to score in double digits this season.
