SAGINAW, Mich.— Former University of Detroit standout
Archie Tullos was officially enshrined in the Saginaw County Sports Hall of Fame at the organization's banquet Sunday afternoon. Tullos was part of an induction class that included nine individuals and one team.
Tullos followed former Saginaw High Coach Charlie Coles to U of D when Coles took an assistant coach position prior to Tullos' freshman year. The sharp-shooter was named to the Mid-Continent Conference's (MCC) All-Freshman team in 1984-85, while earning second team honors in '86-87 and was a first team selection one year later.
He was second in the nation in free throw percentage (90.8 percent) as a senior, taking the Titans to the MCC title game. His 25.1 scoring clip was among the best in the NCAA that season. He owns two league records-- three-point shooting percentage with .481 (63 of 131) in 1986-87 and free throw percentage, .908 (139 of 153) in '87-88.
Tullos still holds the Calihan Hall record for most points by a Detroit player (49) in one of the most epic games ever to be played there. Tullos' 49-point effort on Feb. 22, 1988 was in response to future NBA standout Hersey Hawkins' 63 points for Bradley University in a shootout 122-107 win for the Braves on that night.
He finished his collegiate career with 1,731 points, fifth all-time at the school. His .433 career three-point field goal percentage is easily the top mark in the Titan record books as he led the team in scoring in each of his final two seasons.
The Saginaw County Sports Hall of Fame 2011 Induction Class also included: Tom Anagnost, Tammie Spatz-Stone, Ed Albosta, Bob Becker Sr., Joe McDonald, Marshall Thomas, Ron Vondette, Art Pelzer and the 1943-1944 Arthur Hill State Championship Boys Basketball Team.
