Post-game interview with Coach McCallum
Highlights from Horizon League Network
DETROIT-- A 32-13 run to close the game gave the host Detroit Titans an 80-56 win over Alabama State Thursday night on Dick Vitale Court at Calihan Hall.
Detroit (6-8) got solid performances from junior
Doug Anderson-- 16 points and 12 rebounds-- and sophomore
Ray McCallum, who scored a team-high 19 in the win. It was the finish of the game that had the Titans fans filled with holiday cheer after keeping the Hornets without a field goal for more than seven minutes to spark the run that provided the distance.
ASU (2-9) led early on and had the advantage for most of the opening half. Trailing by six, the Titans ran-off a 10-1 spurt to briefly regain control. A Kenderek Washington triple retied the score at 30-apiece with 3:08 to play in the period, but UDM closed the half with 10 of the final 14 points to take a six-point lead to the locker room.
With Detroit clinging to a modest 48-43 lead just over five minutes into the second half,
Eli Holman slammed home a dunk then
Doug Anderson fired down two emphatic slams to shrug any notion of the Titans looking ahead to a holiday break. It would be the start of a "Grinch-ish" defensive effort that saw just three ASU field goals over the final 14:37.
Following the dunk show, an energetic Titan squad continued to run the floor and converted on a few fast-break opportunities to pile-up a 15-point lead with under nine minutes to play. Twas the season to give as Detroit shared the ball to the tune of 18 assists, the fourth time UDM has reached that plateau in a game-- all wins.
The stingy defensive play included eight shots sent back-- including four by
LaMarcus Lowe and three by Holman. All told, the Hornets made just 7-of-29 (.241) in the second stanza and made just 31.7 percent of its shots for the game, the lowest percentage for a Titan opponent since last season's blowout win at Central Michigan (27.0) on Dec. 18.
The Detroit bench again posted numbers, highlighted by Holman's six points, four boards, three assists and three blocks.
Evan Bruinsma hit on both of his shots for seven points while
P.J. Boutte added four points to outscore the Hornet reserves, 21-6.
The Titans will break for the holiday before embarking on the rest of the Horizon League schedule. Detroit visits UIC next Thursday and remains in the Windy City Dec. 31 to battle Loyola.
