All-time Series: Detroit leads, 23-13
ON TAP
The Titans return to Horizon League play this weekend, heading to Chicago to play UIC and Loyola. Detroit looks to even up its overall and conferences records during the trip.
SCOUTING THE FLAMES
UIC is 4-1 at home this season, including wins in its last three at the UIC Pavilion. The Flames are led by Daniel Barnes' 12.1 points per game while Darrin Williams chips in 10.3 per contest. Barnes has been UIC's top scorer in each of the last four games and six times total this season.
THE SERIES WITH UIC
Detroit leads the all-time series, 23-13 with wins in each of the last three meetings. The Titans swept UIC last season, including a dramatic 72-69 win on Jan. 8 at the UIC Pavilion. The win came when
Ray McCallum grabbed an offensive rebound on a free throw miss and put it back in the closing seconds for the win.
WHAT'S NEXT?
Following the Windy City trip, Detroit heads back home for a big week with a pair of ESPN3 games. The Titans host Valparaiso on Friday, Jan. 6 at 8:00 p.m. then the Butler Bulldogs on Sunday, Jan. 8 at 4:00 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT
A 32-13 run to close the game gave the host Detroit Titans an 80-56 win over Alabama State last Thursday at Calihan Hall. Detroit got solid performances from junior
Doug Anderson-- 16 points and 12 rebounds-- and sophomore
Ray McCallum, who scored a team-high 19 in the win. It was the finish of the game that had the Titans fans filled with holiday cheer after keeping the Hornets without a field goal for more than seven minutes to spark the run that provided the distance.
RETURN TO CHI-TOWN
Senior
Donavan Foster returns to his hometown this weekend. Foster will face a fellow Curie Condor Thursday as UIC freshman Greg Travis (who also wears No. 5) calls Curie his alma mater as well.
LEAGUE LEADERS
Detroit finds itself atop of many statistical categories through 14 games. The Titans are the Horizon League's top free-throw shooters (73.2 %) while
Chase Simon's 15.7 points per game is tied for first individually.
GOOD FROM 15
The Titans lead the Horizon League in free throw shooting at 73.9 percent heading into Thursday. Four Titans are in the top 10, topped by the HL's best free-thrower to date
Doug Anderson, who carries a hefty .875 percentage.
Jason Calliste is eighth (.763) with teammates
Ray McCallum (.758) and
Chase Simon (.747) ninth and tenth, respectively.
COUSY CANDIDATE
Sophomore
Ray McCallum can add another honor to his quickly-building resume. McCallum was named a Bob Cousy Award candidate, one of nearly 60 among all NCAA Divisions awarded to the top point guard in collegiate basketball. Other notable candidates include fellow World University Games Team USA members Ashton Gibbs (Pitt) and Scoop Jardine (Syracuse) and Horizon League foe Kaylon Williams of Milwaukee. The list will be pared down to a final 20 by Jan. 1st, final ten a month later and then the final five as March approaches.
