DETROIT--  Detroit honored a legend and treated a raucous crowd to a victory with a 69-63 win over St. John's at "Dick Vitale Court" at Calihan Hall Monday night.  The court was named after Detroit's former head coach and athletic director in a pre-game dedication ceremony.

The Titans used a jacked-up crowd of 5,377 as a springboard to a quick 8-0 advantage and an early St. John's timeout.  Jason Calliste and Chase Simon each hit from deep and Ray McCallum added a lay-in as the Titans, donned in their throwback jerseys from the 70s era, gained the upper hand.

St. John's battled back to tie the score at 15-apiece and even took a brief one-point lead, but then went on a stretch without a point for nearly eight minutes.  Detroit took advantage and raced past the Red Storm, mounting an 11-point cushion by halftime.  At the break, Simon had 13 points while McCallum had a seven-point, four-assist stat line.

A 9-0 St. John's start to the second stanza quickly shifted momentum and brought the lead to within a bucket at 32-30. Simon broke the drought with a jumper  and Doug Anderson hammered home a dunk in transition to swing the pendulum clearly back in Detroit's favor.

With each Red Storm push, the Titans had an answer as the lead never dipped below four the rest of the way.  After a dunk by Sir-Dominic Pointer to cut the deficit to five, McCallum nailed a deep triple and later scored on a layup, part of his 14-point second half to allow the student section to rush the court after a solid win.

Detroit held St. John's to just 35.1 percent from the floor (20-of-57) and forced 16 turnovers.  Moe Harkless led a trio of Red Storm players in double figures with 19 (D'Angelo Harrison 15, Pointer 10).

McCallum led all scorers with 21 points while Simon added 20 for Detroit.

UDM wraps up its four-game homestand Thursday when it hosts long-time rival Western Michigan.  Tip is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. as the back-end of a doubleheader with the women's team.  The Titan women host Michigan at 5:00 p.m.

Notes:  Dick Vitale was 78-30 in four years as head coach of the Titans from 1973-77 ... he led U of D to the NCAA tournament in '77 and a program-record 21 straight wins ... Many of Dick Vitale's former players and coaches made the trip back to Detroit to support him and the Titans, including Terry Tyler, John Long, Smokey Gaines, among others ... the Titans wore jerseys fashioned by Michigan-based Moneyball Sportswear, a company owned by former Titan Desmond Ferguson ... the jerseys will be sold via auction later in the year ... Brandon Romain scored his first point as a Titan, splitting a pair of free throws in the final seconds.
