Detroit Drops Close Match at Dayton

Final Match Results

DAYTON, Ohio – Women's tennis split in singles and nearly took the doubles point and the win but the Flyers walked away with a 4-3 victory over the Titans in Dayton earlier today.

In the double's portion of the match, freshmen Elena Strakhova (Penza, Russia/#216 "Didakt") and Raina Halabi (Beamsville, ON/Niagara Academy of Tennis) paired up again at No. 3 and posted an 8-1 victory for Detroit. It was the fourth win in their last six matches together.

A loss at No. 1 sent the Titans looking for that last win to secure the doubles point. Senior Erin Weldon (Kalamazoo, MI/Mattawan) and freshman Julia Fernandes (Mississauga, ON/John Fraser) paired up at No. 2 and lost in a tiebreaker 9-8 (8-6).

In singles, the No. 1 and No. 2 Titans, sophomore Carolina Salas Espinosa (Monterrey, Mexico/Preparatoria No. 7) and Strakhova, both won their matches in straight sets.

A third win for Detroit came at No. 5 from Fernandes and pulled the Titans within a point of winning the match. In the end, the Flyers prevailed for the win for their second win of the year.

Detroit will now return home only to head out again and face the Marquette Golden Eagles this Friday at 7:00 p.m.
