DAYTON, Ohio-- Detroit used an 8-for-13 effort from the three-point line to grab a 77-67 win over host Wright State Friday night at the Ervin J. Nutter Center in the regular season finale. With the win, UDM clinched the fifth-seed in the upcoming Horizon League tournament, set to begin on Tuesday.
Uncharacteristic in the path to victory, UDM beat Wright State at its own game by outshooting the Raiders from the perimeter (62% to 27%), all without a single point from its leading scorer (#Ray McCallum) until the final minute. WSU came into the game as the league's top team defenders against the three-point shot (.320), but
Chris Blake and crew used an efficient perimeter attack to earn the season sweep.
Wright State (18-13, 10-8 HL) did not have the opportunity to see Blake in the teams' first meeting back on Dec. 4. The junior took advantage. Blake made five of his first six shots en route to 15 quick points in the first half.
Fifth-year senior Vaughn Duggins had the answer, however, for the Raiders in the opening stanza. His turnaround jumper capped an 8-0 WSU run to close the half and the home team went in the break with a 32-27 lead.
From there, Detroit (16-15, 10-8) came out in the second-half firing, going on a 13-4 run until a Duggins triple broke the streak.
Eli Holman, who had 13 points and 11 rebounds, answered with a jumper on the next possession and the Titans would never relinquish the lead.
Chase Simon scored on a twisting lay-up but Duggins counter-punched with a triple and later a dunk part of his game-high 27 points, doing all he could to keep his team in the game.
A
Donavan Foster three from the top of the key with the shot-clock winding down stretched the lead back to five. WSU, who started 1-of-14 from distance, got a trey from N'Gai Evans to trim the margin to a bucket at 64-62.
Chase Simon immediately countered with a three in the corner, sparking a game-ending 13-5 Titan run to seal the win.
Four Titans were in double figures scoring, led by Blake's career-best 21 points. Both Holman and
Nick Minnerath (19 points, 11 rebounds) each had double-doubles in the Detroit victory. The starting frontcourt of Minnerath and Holman combined for 22 rebounds, more than the entire Wright State team as the Titans owned a 40-21 advantage on the glass.
Detroit earned the No. 5 seed in the HL tournament and will host a first round game on Tues., Mar. 1 at 7:00 p.m. at Calihan Hall. The Titans will face the No. 8 seed (either Green Bay or Loyola, both of whom will play on Saturday).
