Wright State Downed by Titans

FINAL MATCH RESULTS

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Titans are headed to the Horizon League Semifinals for the third straight year. Detroit's women's tennis squad captured a 4-1 victory over No. 4 seed Wright State Thursday afternoon and will face UIC on Friday at 2:30 p.m.

"The bottom line is we were a great team in the last month and showed again today that we can compete well together," said interim women's head coach Pjotrs Necajevs.

Sophomore Carolina Salas Espinosa (Monterrey, Mexico/Preparatoria No. 7) topped Detroit with a pair of wins in the match-up. She paired with junior Amanda Cornwell (Waterford, MI/Kettering) at No. 1 doubles for an 8-2 win. In singles, she added a 6-4, 6-1 victory in the No. 2 spot.

The Titans took the early lead in the match with a second doubles victory as freshmen Elena Strakhova (Penza, Russia/#216 "Didakt") and Raina Halabi (Beamsville, ON/Niagara Academy of Tennis) took down their opponents 8-4 in the No. 2 spot.

Senior Erin Weldon (Kalamazoo, MI/Mattawan) clinched the win earning the fourth point for Detroit at No. 5 singles with a 6-1, 6-3 score. Freshman Julia Fernandes (Mississauga, ON/John Fraser) also posted a straight set win with the same scores.

The Titans will now have a rematch of the last two Horizon League Championships as they will take on UIC on Friday. The Flames have faced Detroit in each of the last two finals and have defeated the Titans both years.

"We look ahead to our next match against UIC. They are a team at a high level and we look forward to competing with them to the best of our ability," added Necajevs.

The final round of the tournament will take place on Saturday with the championship match scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
