Final Match Results
SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – The Titans (2-16, 2-3 Horizon League) swept the doubles portion of the match and took three of six singles contests to earn a 4-3 victory over Green Bay (1-12, 1-7 Horizon League) Friday night.
The No. 3 doubles pairing of freshman
Julia Fernandes (Mississauga, ON/John Fraser) and senior
Erin Weldon (Kalamazoo, MI/Mattawan) won 8-1 to start the night off on the right track. The No. 2 pairing of freshmen
Raina Halabi (Beamsville, ON/Niagara Academy of Tennis) and
Elena Strakhova (Penza, Russia/#216 "Didakt") continued the streak winning 8-6 and the No. 1 combo of sophomore
Carolina Salas Espinosa (Monterrey, Mexico/Preparatoria No. 7) and junior
Amanda Cornwell (Waterford, MI/Kettering) completed the doubles sweep with a third victory.
In singles, the Titans in the top two positions each came away with a win as Espinosa, at No. 1, and Strakhova, at No. 2, each took their opponents down in straight sets. A third singles win came from the No. 6 position as junior
Melanie Capuano (Grosse Pointe Farms, MI/Grosse Pointe South) did not allow a single point as she won 6-0, 6-0.
The doubles point and three singles victories were enough to help the Titans take their second win in their last five outings.
Detroit will host Milwaukee Saturday evening in the last home dual meet scheduled in the dual season. The Titans will honor senior Weldon before the doubles matches begin at 7:30 p.m.
