Release On Fall Signees
DETROIT -- Detroit men's lacrosse head coach Matt Holtz has announced that local product Mike Birney (Plymouth, MI/Catholic Central) has signed a National Letter of Intent to play for the Titans.
“Mike is both a skilled lacrosse player and a fantastic athlete,” said Holtz. “He will be able to compete for playing time right from day one.”
Birney will join Detroit as a freshman in when he enrolls in the fall. The 6-1, 185-lb midfielder is a four-year varsity letter winner and is currently a team captain for the Shamrocks. Catholic Central is 9-3 on the year and ranked No. 3 in the state of Michigan in the latest power poll by Laxpower.com. He earned All-State, All-Region and All-Catholic honors as a junior, helping the school to a runner-up finish at the state championship.
He played club lacrosse for Team Total for three years, helping the squad secure a championship at the Notre Dame camp last summer. A multi-sport athlete, he starred on the football team taking All-League honors as a senior as the DCC's starting quarterback. He was also a member of the Shamrocks Division I state championship team as a junior.
Birney is the ninth recruit to sign with Detroit following the eight signees in the fall: Brandon Beauregard (Clarkston, MI/Notre Dame Prep), Damie Danseglio (Sayville, NY/Connetquot), Joe Gifford (Rochester Hills, MI/Notre Dame Prep), Tyler Harper (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin), Chris Kelly (Valrico, FL/Saint Andrews School), Chris Mandell (Sterling Heights, MI/De La Salle), Tyler Schroer (Lakewood Ranch, FL/Lakewood Ranch) and Chris Shevins (Merrick, NY/Mepham).
