Titans Improve to 2-0 with Win over Saint Joseph’s

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA – The Detroit Titan men's soccer team used a team effort to defeat Saint Joseph's on Thursday night by the final score of 5-2. The Titans have not started the year 2-0 since 2002.

“It always feels good to get a victory on the road,” Head Coach Nicholas Deren said. “It was the first time we have ever beaten that team and that is an accomplishment in itself.”

Five different players scored for the Titans as they were able to beat the Hawks for the first time in school history. Sam Seppo scored the first goal of the game, and Tom Allott scored his first goal of his career for Detroit in the first half.

“It was hard to break them down because they were so organized,” Deren added. “It took some individual brilliance by Sam Seppo to break down their back line and score an absolute cracker of a goal.”

Cameron Roberts, Tevin Wynter, and Patrick Soltys rounded out the scoring for UDM. Sophomore Adam Bedell picked up an assist on each of the three goals in the second half.

“Saint Joseph's work rate gave us problems at times, but I believe our dead balls at the end were the difference in this game,” Deren said.

Seppo's unassisted goal was blasted from the left side of the field into the top right corner of the net. A defensive mishap allowed the Hawks to tie the game, but Allott answered giving UDM the 2-1 lead at the half. Freshman Matt Ybarra earned the assist on the play.

The second half got off to a fast start as Cameron Roberts scored his first goal as a Titan at the 48:44 mark. Adam Bedell started the play with a throw in from the near side of the field. Pat Lepera got in on the action by heading the ball back where Roberts was waiting to put it home.

Bedell used his throw in ability to record a game-high three assists against the Hawks. Schoolcraft transfer Tevin Wynter scored his first goal as a Titan from the middle of the field, and Patrick Soltys also scored his first career goal with a header off the Bedell throw in.

Detroit will host Buffalo on Sunday, Sept. 4 at Titan Field for the home opener. Game time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
