DAY ONE RESULTS
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- The women's tennis team wrapped up the first day of the fall season at the Bowling Green Invitational Friday as four Titans were in action against various Division I tennis programs.
In flight one of doubles play, senior
Amanda Cornwell and newcomer
Chloe Karoub paired up falling 8-2 to Bowling Green's Nikki Chiricosta and Mary Hill. The Titan duo will face two more competitions tomorrow with the first coming against Vanessa Whyte and Abbey Neff of IUPUI and the second opponent dependant on the results of the first match.
In flight three doubles, sophomore's
Elena Strakhova and
Julia Fernandes took down the pairing of Lizzie Oosterbaan and Daniella Patton of Xavier by an 8-3 score and will have a chance to play for either third place or first place in the flight in tomorrow's match-ups to be decided after facing a Horizon League pair from Cleveland State.
In singles play, Cornwell in flight two, fell to Andrea Wolf of Xavier in her opening match 6-3, 7-5 but rebounded to defeat Natasha James of Evansville in a second set tiebreaker, 7-5, 7-6 (6). Cornwell will face Vanessa Steiner of Duquesne tomorrow in a fifth place match.
Strakhova dropped a singles match to Catrine Bjerrehus of Cleveland State but like Cornwell, would come back to win her second match downing Patton of Xavier 6-1, 7-6 (5). Strakhova will face Judy Li of Duquesne in flight three's fifth place match tomorrow.
Karoub began her singles match-up facing off with Oosterbaan of Xavier but the Musketeer wound up on top winning in straight sets. Karoub was one of three Titans to advance to a fifth place match after defeating Gaby Fifer of Evansville 6-3, 6-2 in her second match. Karoub will face Nicole Janek of Cleveland State tomorrow's contest in flight four.
In the sixth flight, Fernandes fell to Natalie Handler of Xavier in straight sets before taking Silvia Carvajal of Toledo to a third and tiebreaking set. After a 6-4 defeat in the second set, Fernandes fell 10-5 in the breaker and will play in the seventh place match going head-to-head with Jesika Bays of IUPUI.
The final day of the tournament will take place on Saturday with full results to follow.
