Titans Head To Youngstown State

Game time is set for 7:05 p.m., at the Beeghly Center.<br /> <br /> Fans that can't travel with the team can follow all the action live on the Horizon League Network as well as with a live stats feed through Presto Sports. Followers of the Titans on Twitter will also get live updates throughout the game.<br /> <br /> A win would even the Titans record on the year as the red, white and blue stand at 9-10 overall, but 5-2 in the Horizon League, good for second place. Detroit had five players tally double digits in scoring in last week&rsquo;s 75-64 win over Wright State, a game that UDM trailed 27-23 before a Titan 25-6 run broke the game wide open.<br /> <br /> Detroit got Chanahl Putnam back in the starting line-up as she returned after missing the last three games with an injury. Junior Demeisha Fambro has also given UDM another scoring option as she is averaging 15.5 points off the bench in her last two games.<br /> <br /> The Titans will continue their road swing in Ohio on Saturday when Detroit visits Cleveland State.<br /> <br /> <strong>DETROIT VS. YOUNGSTOWN STATE</strong><br /> Detroit has won seven in a row and leads the overall series, 16-12. UDM has posted a + 13.8 scoring margin during its seven-game winning streak.<br /> <br /> The Titans are 5-9 on the road in the series, but have won the last three at the Beeghly Center.<br /> <br /> The teams first met back in 1983 as YSU won the first game, 60-59, in the Motor City.<br /> <br /> <strong>ABOUT THE PENGUINS</strong><br /> Youngstown State was picked to finish last in the Horizon League&rsquo;s Preseason Poll, but the Penguins have played well already matching last year&rsquo;s win total. With that said, YSU has dropped four in a row and enters the game at 8-10 on the year and 2-5 in the Horizon League.<br /> <br /> Detroit and Youngstown State had three common non-conference opponents on its schedule as the Penguins downed IPFW (91-81) and Western Michigan (80-55), while falling to Bowling Green (73-61).<br /> <br /> Junior Brandi Brown &ndash; the Horizon League Preseason Player of the Year&nbsp; &ndash; leads the team and is third in the HL in scoring (17.1), while topping the conference in rebounding (10.1). She also has seven double-doubles on the season.<br /> <br /> Freshman Heidi Schlegel is second on the team averaging 10.8 points per game, while senior Kenya Middlebrooks is tallying 10.6 ppg.<br /> <br /> <strong>GOOD NUMBERS VS. YSU</strong><br /> Junior Yar Shayok has posted some great numbers against the Penguins in her career. In four games against Youngstown State, Shayok is averaging 11.0 points and 12.2 rebounds per game. She has a pair of double-doubles in those four games as well as three double-digit scoring outings and three games with 10 or more rebounds.&nbsp; Last season, she had 16 rebounds in the contest in Detroit and 17 points in the game at Youngstown.<br /> <br /> Senior Jalesa Jones is tallying 8.1 points, 4,1 rebounds and 3.6 assists per game in six career games. She has been in double digits in scoring twice and has four games with four or more assists. Junior Demeisha Fambro is averaging 8.2 points in four games, with a pair of double-digit scoring contests.<br /> <br /> <strong>BROWN LEADING THE HL, TOP 20 IN THE NATION</strong><br /> In the latest NCAA stats, released on Monday, Jan. 23, freshman Shareta Brown is currently leading the Horizon League and is 18th in the nation in field-goal percentage (56.6%), while standing sixth in the HL in scoring (15.6) and eighth in rebounding (8.7).<br /> <br /> <strong>JONES TOP 50 TOO</strong><br /> Not only is freshman Shareta Brown among the top 50 in the country, so is senior Jalesa Jones. The veteran point guard leads the Horizon League and is 50th in the country with 4.8 assists per game. She is also tied for third in the conference with a 1.4 assist-to-turnover ratio.<br /> <br /> As a team, Detroit is second in the HL in assists and 60th in the nation at 14.5 per game. The Titans are also second in the league and 68th in rebounding margin (4.3), and 74th in field-goal percentage (41.5%).<br /> <br /> <strong>NO OPEN 3&rsquo;S</strong><br /> UDM has held its last four opponents to a combined 22-of-77 (28.5%) from behind the arc.<br /> <br /> Detroit is currently second in the conference in three-point field goal percentage defense holding opponents to just 29.5% from the outside.&nbsp;<br /> <br /> That defense should come in handy against a Youngstown State team that tops the Horizon League with 151 3-pointers on the year.<br /> <br /> <strong>FAMBRO&rsquo;S SURGE</strong><br /> Junior Demeisha Fambro has certainly provided a huge offensive spark off the bench in the last two games, averaging 15.5 ppg. She had 18 points in 29 minutes against Green Bay and came back to net 13 points in 26 minutes in the win over Wright State.<br /> <br /> In her previous six games, she scored just 23 total points.<br /> <br /> In the last two games, Fambro is 9-of-21 (42.8%) from the field and 6-of-13 (46.1%) from three-point range, while also pulling down 6.5 rebounds.<br /> <br /> Her seven rebounds versus Green Bay was a season high, while her four 3-pointers against the Phoenix was also a career-best.<br /> <br /> The 18 points was her second-highest output of the season following the 21 she had at Ball State. It was also the most she has ever scored in a Horizon League contest.<br /> <br /> <strong>JONES CHASING SCHOOL RECORD</strong><br /> Senior Jalesa Jones is approaching the school record for assists and the way she is playing, that mark might be all hers by the end of her career.<br /> <br /> Jones now has 446 career assists recently passing head coach Autumn Rademacher for third place in Titan history.<br /> <br /> She is now just five away from Jocelyn Boyd&rsquo;s second-place mark of 451 and 40 shy of Mary Lillie&rsquo;s school record 486.<br /> Jones has 91 assists on the year and leads the Horizon League and is 50th in the country with 4.8 per game.<br /> <br /> As a freshman, Jones had 84 assists, while collecting 159 as a sophomore and 112 last year.<br /> <br /> For her career, she is tallying 4.0 apg.<br /> <br /> <strong>HIGH 5</strong><br /> Detroit had five players in double figures for the second time this season in its win over Wright State last Saturday.<br /> <br /> Sophomore Megan Hatter led the way with 16 points, while sophomore Senee Shearer had 14. Junior Demeisha Fambro and freshman Shareta Brown netted 13 and senior Jalesa Jones added 12.<br /> <br /> <strong>ANOTHER HATTER UPRISING</strong><br /> Sophomore Megan Hatter is coming off one of the best games in her young career tying her career-high with 16 points, while also pulling down a career-best eight rebounds against Wright State.<br /> <br /> Hatter was 6-of-12 from the field with another career-high netting three 3-pointers and even coming up with a career-best three steals in 38 minutes of action.<br /> <br /> <strong>GETTING OFFENSIVE</strong><br /> The Detroit offense has really taken off in the last 10 games, averaging 71.3 points per game and scoring 70 or more in seven of the 10 affairs.<br /> <br /> That offense has also helped Detroit post an 8-2 record in that span.&nbsp;&nbsp;<br /> <br /> In Detroit&rsquo;s first nine games, it was averaging just 57.1 points per game, and all of last year, Detroit only topped 70 points six times.<br /> <br /> During this stretch, the Titans tallied a season-best 90 points against IPFW on Dec. 18, shooting a school record 65.5% in the process. UDM connected on 38-of-58 shots, including 22-of-29 (75%) in the second half.<br /> <br /> The 90 points (53 in the second half) were the most by Detroit since posting 90 in a winning effort at Milwaukee last season and the most UDM has scored at home since a 94-67 victory against Cleveland State on Jan. 12, 2002.<br /> <br /> It is also the second most by a Horizon League team this season.<br /> <br /> On the season, UDM is fourth in the Horizon League in scoring at 64.6 points per game.<br /> <br /> <strong>PUTNAM BACK AND HEALTHY</strong><br /> Junior Chanahl Putnam returned to the Titan starting line-up last Saturday in the win over Wright State. Putnam played 17 minutes finishing with three points and tying her season high with four assists.<br /> <br /> She had missed the last three games and six of the last 10 with a nagging injury.<br /> <br /> In her first eight games - prior to her injury at Michigan State - Putnam was in double digits six times, while averaging 10.8 ppg.<br /> <br /> She was shooting just over 40% from the field and from three-point range.<br /> <br /> She had scored a season-high 13 points three times and grabbed a season-best six rebounds at UTSA.<br /> <br /> <strong>DETROIT HITTING FROM DISTANCE</strong><br /> Five Titans connected on a trey and Detroit nailed a season-high 10 3-pointers in its&rsquo; 75-64 victory against Wright State last week.<br /> <br /> The 10 3-pointers were the most since they had 10 at home against Valparaiso last season.<br /> <br /> UDM is currently fourth in the HL in 3-point field-goal percentage hitting 31.6%.<br /> <br /> <strong>YAR LOOKING AT FIFTH</strong><br /> Junior forward Yar Shayok now has 759 career rebounds and currently stands in sixth place in the school record books. She is just 10 shy of fifth place, held by Molly Peterman at 769.<br /> <br /> In her career, she is averaging 9.1 rpg., and has 37 games with double-digit rebounds, including 17 as a redshirt freshman and 16 as a sophomore.<br />
