Highlights from HLN
DETROIT-- Starting center LaMarcus Lowe scored a career-high 14 points and sixth man Eli Holman added a team-high 15 points and 12 rebounds as host Detroit defeated Loyola 67-52 Wednesday night at Calihan Hall in Horizon League play. The duo combined to go 12-for-16 from the floor and amassed five blocks to carry the Titans to their fifth win in their last seven games.
Four Detroit (11-11, 5-5 HL) players were in double figures as sophomore Ray McCallum chipped-in 13 and junior Jason Calliste added 12. Joe Crisman led all scorers with 16 points for Loyola (5-15, 0-10).
It wasn't the low-post pair that set the tone for the game, however. The Titans raced out to a quick 11-2 advantage, forcing a Loyola timeout. That lead expanded to 21-5 in quick fashion, thanks to hot shooting from long distance. Detroit connected on 5-of-6 from deep in the early going and enjoyed a comfortable cushion from the start.
LU got a strong effort from Ben Averkamp, who scored nine of the first 10 Rambler points to keep his team into it in the early going. Loyola scored the final seven points of the opening half to help quell some momentum and whittle the deficit to within nine at 40-31.
UDM made 16-of-28 in the opening stanza and needed those points in the second half when the shots weren't falling. That's when Lowe and Holman were able to handle the scoring load for the home team. The big men combined for five of Detroit's seven field goals in the second half and Lowe swatted four shots to help UDM hold LU to just 21 second-half points.
Loyola had closed it to five at 57-52, but 10 straight Titan points to close the game got UDM back to the .500 mark, both overall (11-11) and in league play (5-5). McCallum aided in closing it out, scoring seven straight points and going 5-6 from the free-throw line en route to a 9-12 effort from the charity stripe on the night.
Crisman's point total helped offset starting forward Walt Gibler, who played just five first-half minutes and had just one point. He came into the game as the team's leading scorer. Averkamp and Jordan Hicks finished with 13 points apiece for the Ramblers.
Detroit will host Illinois-Chicago Friday night. Tip time with UIC is slated for 7:00 p.m. on the Horizon League Network.
Notes: Lowe set a career high in points (14) just three games after etching a then-career high at Green Bay (13 on Jan. 12) ... It was Holman's 26th career double-double and second of the season ... Detroit allowed a season-low 52 points in the win, one game after setting the season low (vs. Wright State- 53) ... UDM started the season hitting 61-227 (.269) from three-point line and have hit 39-104 (.375) since Dec. 31, with team recording 5-2 mark in that stretch.
