Season Preview – Face-Offs

DETROIT -- The Titans will look to increase their face-off wins this season as the position returns a few key players, including a pair of juniors in Brandon Davenport (Grosse Pointe Woods, MI/GP North) and Tyler Corcoran (South Lyon, MI/South Lyon).

Detroit was sixth in the MAAC last season in face offs winning at a 41.2% clip, but a lot of that was because the Titans battled six players who finished in the top 25 in the nation in that category in 2011.

Davenport took most of the face-offs last season ending with 123 wins in 279 attempts (44.1%).  He posted seven games with double-digit victories and was also third on the squad with 53 ground balls. He had some great games for Detroit in 2011 taking 12-of-24 with some key wins down the stretch in the victory at Siena and an 11-of-20-effort with a win to start the fourth quarter and set up the game-winning goal in the semifinals triumph over Marist.

In his two years at Detroit, Davenport – a MAAC All-Academic selection as a sophomore – has tallied 235 wins and a 46.7 winning percentage.

“Brandon works extremely hard and he is very consistent for us,” said head coach Matt Holtz. “He does not jump as often and is part of a solid 1-2 approach we have. He had a good fall and I look for him to be better as a junior.”

Corcoran is back for his third year and he might be one of the most improved Titans as the season begins. He saw action in six games last year winning eight face-offs and that was after winning 34 as a freshman. With Corcoran's continued improvement and Davenport's experience, the Titans have two strong face-off candidates to jump start their offense.

“Tyler is a bit quicker than Brandon, but his biggest problem was jumping the gun,” said Holtz. “He has figured that part out. He was pretty dominant in the fall and has looked great so far here in practice.”

Other Titans will see some action in certain spots throughout the year too in seniors Danny Preston (Hempstead, NY/Hempstead) and Brad Janer (Novi, MI/Detroit Catholic Central), sophomores Joe MacLean  (Bloomfield Hills, MI/Detroit Country Day) and Nick Garippa (Rochester Hills, MI/Notre Dame Prep) and freshman Tyler Harper (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin).

“It is great to have two guys like Corcoran and Davenport out there for us, but they are also a bit of the same kind of player. We have some other guys on the roster for a quick change of pace and I feel really good about face-offs as a whole this year,” added Holtz.
