DAYTON, Ohio (10/10/2012) -- The stadium lights went out at Alumni Field but
Nina Carter's fourth goal of the season at the 70:54 mark led the University of Detroit Mercy women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Wright State Wednesday evening in Horizon League action.
Detroit (6-6-1, 3-2 Horizon League) now sits in a first place tie in the conference with Milwaukee (4-7-1, 3-2 HL). The win over Wright State was the first for the Titans over the Raiders since Oct. 17, 2008 when Detroit won a 1-0 game in overtime at Wright State. The Raiders had also won the last four meetings between the two teams.
“As a coach, we put a total team effort today, the girls worked hard on both sides of the ball and I felt it was a well-deserved win,” said UDM women's soccer head coach
Mike Lupenec. “Wright State is a good team in our league and winning at their place is a great confidence builder for us heading into the rest of the season.”
Carter's goal came after
Abby McCollum broke through the Wright State (6-3-5, 1-1-2 Horizon League) defense at the top of the 18-yard box and generated enough room for a good shot opportunity. Her blast was blocked and the ball went right to
Alyssa Riley, who then had her turn and fired a shot that was also blocked. Carter came in and took the loose ball in front of the net and tapped it in for Detroit in the 71st minute.
The first half saw Detroit generate four corner kicks with two of them nearly trickling in the net for a goal as two shots from Riley were cleared away by Wright State defenders. Twice, after
Rebekah Dornbos corner kicks, Riley found the loose ball and sent a shot on net and had the goalkeeper beat both times, but on both occasions a Raider defender jumped in the way at 37:48 and 41:16.
The Titans finished with a 12-7 shooting advantage in the second half and a 19-13 advantage overall. UDM also had six corner kicks in the game to just two for the Raiders. There were also only eight fouls combined between the two teams, five for Detroit and three for Wright State.
It was the fourth career game-winning goal for Carter who now owns a share of the team lead in points with
Kaitlyn Quarrell at eight points apiece.
Nora Abolins made six saves in goal for Detroit recording her sixth shutout of the season and 21
st shutout of her career putting her just two away from tying the all-time UDM women's soccer career mark of 23 held by Alisson Dube and Katie Fortenberry.
“I really can't give credit to one individual for this game today because everyone contributed from the goalkeeper to the girls up top. The thing is, you're only as good as your last game and we need to work on a few things and come back on Sunday ready for Cleveland State,” said Lupenec.
One of the more bizarre instances of the season took place before the game ended. With 8:01 remaining in the second half, there was an injury delay to Wright State player Lauren Patterson and immediately following that before play could get started again, the stadium went completely dark as the lights all went out. A delay of approximately 30 minutes ensued as facility operators tried to manage the problem. The lights eventually came back on and the remaining 8:01 was played out.
Detroit will return home for this Sunday's Horizon League match-up with Cleveland State set for 1:00 p.m. The game will be senior day and also “Kicking for Cancer” and all those in attendance are encouraged to wear pink to help promote awareness for breast cancer.
