DETROIT (10/9/2012) -- The University of Detroit Mercy residence halls will be a little greener thanks to the effort of students and student-athletes at UDM who took time on Monday afternoon to set out new recycle bins.
New, colored recycle bins were purchased to help encourage separate recycling for cardboard, mixed office paper, and recyclable containers. On Monday afternoon, student-athletes help distribute the containers throughout the residence halls on campus.
“I am really happy with the turnout,” said junior women's tennis player
Raina Halabi . “The athletes are really excited about it and having other people on campus see that athletes are for recycling is hopefully going to get them involved in it and hopefully the pilot project is successful.”
Halabi, who was named an Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Scholar Athlete earlier in July for her work in the classroom, has been trying to initiate a recycling program since her freshman year at the University of Detroit Mercy.
This year, the facilities department at UDM was able to purchase new recycling bins and a group of students set the new bins in the residence halls on Monday afternoon.
“It's definitely nice seeing students and student-athletes giving back and making it a better place. It's just great seeing this place better than when we came here,” said senior
Nina Carter of the women's soccer team.
Student-athletes from men's basketball, men's and women's lacrosse, women's soccer, women's golf, and women's tennis were all part of the afternoon distribution.
“It's all about giving back,” said sophomore
Melissa Anderson of the women's lacrosse team.
The student-athletes took to the challenge and will be looked upon to help keep the recycling program afloat. For more information on the recycling program and what will be recycled, please click
