Titans Conclude Exhibition Season Against Tiffin

DETROIT (11/1/12) –The University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team will take to the court for the final time before the start of the regular season on Saturday, Nov. 3 when the Titans host Tiffin University in their final exhibition contest. The match-up is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. at Calihan Hall and free schedule posters will be provided to fans in attendance.

LAST TIME OUT
Detroit cruised to an 87-55 win over Ryerson University to open its exhibition season on Saturday, Oct. 27 at Calihan Hall. Five Titans scored in double figures including 16 points from both junior guard Jason Calliste and senior forward Nick Minnerath.

Junior Ray McCallum scored 14 points to go along with a game-high eight assists and six steals to help lead the Titans, while Doug Anderson scored an efficient 14 points, shooting 7-for-10 from the floor. Freshman Anton Wilson also reached double figures with 12 points, all from downtown, as he shot 4-for-6 from beyond the arc.

Detroit shot 50.7 percent from the floor, while holding Ryerson to 35.1 percent overall. The Titans won the battle on the boards 40-36 and forced 23 turnovers, while distributing 20 assists and recording seven blocked shots.

LAST YEAR IN EXHIBITIONS
The Titans won both of their exhibition contests last year in convincing fashion as they topped both Madonna (112-52) and Ashland (96-65) by a combined total of 91 points.

UDM jumped out to an early lead and never looked back in a 112-52 win over the Madonna in the first exhibition game, while Nick Minnerath led the Titans attack, scoring a game-high 27 points with eight rebounds and four steals. Four other Titans scored in double figures including Ray McCallum with 17 points, while Jason Calliste had 16 and Doug Anderson added 11.

The Titans finished their exhibition season with a 96-65 win over Ashland as McCallum led all scorers with 24 points on 8-for-10 shooting. He added five rebounds and three steals. All seven Titans that played scored at least nine points, while both Anderson and Minnerath each added a dozen.

TITANS PICKED SECOND
The UDM men's basketball team was picked to finish second in the Horizon League preseason poll voted on by the league's coaches, sports information directors and media members. The reigning HL Tournament Champions totaled 332 points – including four first-place votes – trailing only Valparaiso's 382 points and 40 first-place selections. Green Bay was picked to finish third with 283 points, while Youngstown State was fourth with 243 and Cleveland State fifth tallying 230. Rounding out the poll was Milwaukee (178), Loyola (105), UIC (96) and Wright State (86).

McCALLUM NAMED HL PRESEASON POY
Junior guard Ray McCallum was named the Horizon League Preseason Player of the Year for the second-straight season, following a super sophomore year that saw him lead the Titans in scoring (15.4 ppg), assists (4.0 apg) and steals (1.6 spg).

McCallum, the Horizon League Tournament MVP last year, helped lead the Titans to the League crown and their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 1999. He was named to the Lou Henson All-America team as well as the National Basketball Coaches Association (NBCA) All-District First Team and the National All-Jesuit Team after a superb season that saw him become the 37th Titan to surpass 1,000 career points and the first to do it as a sophomore.

TWO FOR THE SHOW
Two Titans were named to the 2012-13 Preseason All-Horizon League teams as Ray McCallum, the HL Preseason Player of the Year, was named to the All-Horizon League First Team and senior Nick Minnerath to the All-League Second Team. Minnerath the 2010-11 Titans co-MVP averaged 11.2 points and 4.8 rebounds per game as a junior, including six 20-point games over the final two months of action. He averaged 12.0 points and 4.0 rebounds in the first five games last year before enduring a season ending injury.

UP NEXT
UDM will open its regular season when it hosts Northern Michigan on Friday, Nov. 9. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. at Calihan Hall and will be streamed live on the Horizon League Network.
