LAST TIME OUT
Detroit (1-1) missed a three-point attempt at the buzzer as the St. John's Red Storm escaped with a 77-74 win on Tuesday at Carnesecca Arena as part of the ESPN College Hoops Tip-Off Marathon. Three Titans scored in double figures led by Ray McCallum who finished with a team-high 21 points.

McCallum made a lay-up with two seconds remaining to trim the Red Storm lead to three, he then deflected the inbounds pass directly to Juwan Howard, Jr. who fired a three pointer at the buzzer, which was online, but fell short to give the Johnnies the win.

Senior Jason Calliste pitched in 18 points, while Howard finished with 10. Doug Anderson had another solid showing with eight points and nine rebounds, including a dunk that finished No. 1 in the SportsCenter Top 10 Plays, while Nick Minnerath and Evan Bruinsma also scored eight points apiece.

St. John's (1-0) outrebounded UDM, 44-42, and shot 45.9 percent from the field, while holding the Titans to just 34.6 percent for the game. Detroit did force 15 Red Storm turnovers, which resulted in 17 points for the Titans; 12 points came in the first half. The Titans also recorded 13 assists, 11 steals, and four blocked shots in the game.

McCALLUM NAMED TO THE WOODEN AWARD PRESEASON TOP 50
Detroit junior guard Ray McCallum was recently named to the John R. Wooden Award Preseason Top 50 list, according to a release. The list recognizes the top-returning players in all of college basketball (transfers, freshmen and medical redshirts are not eligible for the preseason list).

The Los Angeles Athletic Club compiles the list, which is chosen by a preseason poll of national college basketball media members.  Each year these 50 student-athletes who, based on last year's individual performance and team records, are the early frontrunners for college basketball's most prestigious honor (although do not have to be listed to qualify for the postseason award).

McCallum, the Horizon League preseason Player of the Year and first team selection for the second-straight season, was named the Horizon League Tournament MVP last year after he helped lead the Titans to the League crown and their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 1999. McCallum led the team in scoring (15.4 ppg), assists (4.0 apg) and steals (1.6 spg) for the second-straight season.
