Game #6: Detroit Looks To Get Back On Track Against Western Michigan

GAMEDAY CENTRAL       Game Notes

DETROIT (11/27/2012) --
Looking to end a two-game slide after its Thanksgiving trip to California, the Detroit women's basketball team will be back at home on Wednesday as the Titans host in-state rival Western Michigan. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m., on Dick Vitale Court in Calihan Hall.

The contest is part of a special night of Titan basketball as Detroit is hosting a Toiletry Drive, where all the proceeds will go towards the YWCA. Any fans who bring toiletries to the game WILL RECEIVE COMPLIMENTARY ADMISSION to see the Titans take on the Broncos. The YWCA is an organization that provides safe housing and counseling for women and children fleeing the horrors of abusive homes.

The game will be broadcast live on the Horizon League Network with Dan York calling of the action. There will also be live stats available for the contest. Titan fans can follow every UDM game this season through the women's basketball GAMEDAY CENTRAL page located on the Titans Athletic Website that will keep fans one click away from all the action. This page will feature links for live stats (audio and video when applicable) as well as links for all the latest info while also making it easy to find the Titans on social media and to purchase photos and game tickets.

The Titans are 2-3 on the year after falling to #6/7 Penn State (80-72) and South Alabama (59-56) at the Radisson Hotel Chatsworth Thanksgiving Basketball Tournament at Cal State Northridge. Four Titans scored in double figures against the Lady Lions, with sophomore Audrey Matteson leading the way with a career-high 20 points. Sophomore Shareta Brown had 16 points and 15 rebounds, while senior Demeisha Fambro added 17 off the bench. Brown would come back with a team-high 18 points against the Lady Jaguars to earn All-Tournament honors.

Western Michigan is 2-3 on the season and also had a Thanksgiving trip splitting a pair of games at Northern Arizona. WMU defeated the host Lumberjacks, 78-67, to open the event, but dropped a 66-48 affair to Tulane in the championship.

After Western Michigan, UDM will hit the road for games at Ohio (Dec. 2) and at Ball State (Dec. 6). The Titans would like to remind all fans that there is a bus trip scheduled for the game at Ohio that is in conjunction with the men's team playing at Pittsburgh on Saturday. THE DETROIT-WMU SERIES
Dead even at 13-apiece is where the series stands after the two schools played for the first time in 1979.

Detroit has won two in a row in the series after a streak that saw Western Michigan take four straight and six of seven between 1998-2006.

UDM is 8-5 at home all-time against Western Michigan, including a 66-53 victory on Nov. 19, 2010, the first meeting between the two schools in four years.

ABOUT THE BRONCOS
Western Michigan is 2-3 on the season after splitting its Thanksgiving trip to Northern Arizona. The Broncos opened that tournament up with a 78-67 win over host Northern Arizona before falling to Tulane, 66-48.

Corie Buchanan leads three Broncos in double-digit scoring with 12.0 points per game, along with 3.0 assists per game.

Aurielle Anderson is tallying 10.6 points and 3.6 assists per game, while Miracle Woods is averaging 10.3 ppg., and 5.4 rebounds.

Shane Clipfell is in his first year as head coach at WMU after spending the last five years as an assistant at Michigan State.

GET READY FOR THE MAC
The game against Western Michigan marks three straight versus teams from the Mid-American Conference. UDM will follow the home contest with trips to Ohio on Sunday and Ball State next Thursday.

AGAINST THE MID-AMERICAN CONFERENCE
With their 61-54 triumph at Eastern Michigan earlier in the year, the Titans are now 74-62 all-time against current teams from the Mid-American Conference.

Since head coach Autumn Rademacher took over the reins as the Titan leader in 2008, Detroit is 8-6 against the league – and 7-3 in its last 10 games.

COACH RAD KNOWS A THING OR TWO ABOUT WMU
Titan head coach Autumn Rademacher knows Western Michigan pretty well as her first coaching job was as an assistant with the Broncos.

She spent seven seasons (1997-04) at the Kalamazoo school helping WMU to a 108-100 mark, which included a 2003 NCAA Tournament bid following its Mid-American Conference tournament title.

SUCCESS IN THE GREAT LAKES STATE
UDM is 102-64 all-time against its' stately foes, and 8-4 since the start of the 2010-11 season, with the only losses coming to Michigan (2x) and Michigan State (2x).

JUST OUTSIDE THE NCAA TOP 10
The NCAA released its first statistical information for women's basketball on Monday and sophomore Shareta Brown is just outside the top 10 in scoring.

She is currently 11th in the nation at 22.2 points per game - the highest scoring total out of any Division I player in the state of Michigan and trailing only Cleveland State's Shalonda Winton's 24.8 (5th in NCAA) in the HL.

Brown is also 71st in field-goal percentage (54.2%) and 95th in rebounding (9.2).

OTHER NCAA MARKS
Sophomore Audrey Matteson ranks 59th in the country with 2.6 3-pointers per game, while senior Yar Shayok is 87th in rebounding pulling down 9.4 per game.

I GOT 20 ON IT
Sophomore Audrey Matteson netted her first career 20-point game with exactly 20 against #6/7 Penn State. She hit a career-best seven field goals in going 7-of-16 from the field, while tying her career high with four 3-pointers.

Matteson has now been in double digits in scoring in four of UDM's five games - she had only nine versus South Alabama - and is currently second on the team at 12.8 ppg.

SHAYOK NEARING 1000
Senior Yar Shayok is now 57 points away from becoming the 17th player in school history to reach 1,000-career points.

Shayok is currently 18th in school history with 943 points as she recently passed former teammate Jalesa Jones (939). She is now looking to pass another former teammate in Sandi Brown (983) on her way to reaching the 1,000-point barrier.

The fifth-year senior – who redshirted after playing just two games as a freshman due to a foot injury – is averaging 9.2 points per game in her career. She tallied 7.2 ppg, last season and had her best year so far as a redshirt freshman recording 11.8 ppg.

IN DOUBLE FIGURES AGAIN
With her team-high 18 points against South Alabama, sophomore Shareta Brown has now scored in double figures in 36 of the 39 games she has played in, including 25-straight games.

The last time she did not net double figures was on Dec. 31, 2011, when she had eight in the win over Valparaiso. She also had just six points in the 73-64 win at Western Michigan last year.

During this stretch, she has posted 20 points or more on 13 occasions.

TITANS AT CALIHAN HALL
The Titans were 11-3 at home last season and are now 28-11 in their last 39 home games after defeating Canisius at home on Nov. 13.

Detroit was also 9-1 on Dick Vitale Court against Horizon League opponents in 2010, with its lone blemish to nationally-ranked Green Bay.

UDM has a 36-22 ledger in Calihan Hall since head coach Autumn Rademacher returned to her alma mater in 2008.

In 35 years of play in the Motor City, the Titans have enjoyed a 264-143 (.634) home court record.

WE OWN THE PAINT
With its two highly-skilled post players in senior Yar Shayok and sophomore Shareta Brown, Detroit is currently outscoring its opponents, 164-116, in the paint on the year.

During the 2011-12 campaign, Detroit owned a 1012-630 advantage in points in the paint.

REYNOLDS ON THE MARK
Freshman Rosanna Reynolds has taken over the point guard duties for Detroit and leads the team with 20 assists through the first five games.

She has three four-assist efforts already and posted her season high of six against #6/7 Penn State.

In terms of scoring, Reynolds netted a season-high 15 points on 5-of-8 shooting against Canisius and added 11 against South Alabama and 10 versus the Lady Lions. Her 8.8 ppg., ranks third on the squad.

DOMINATING THE BOARDS ALREADY
Through four games, Detroit had owned the glass to the tune of a +7.6 rebounding margin.

UDM dominated the boards against #6/7 Penn State with a 46-31 advantage. UDM also completely owned the boards versus Canisius, outrebounding the Golden Griffins 44-28.

Last season, Detroit won the battle of the boards in 23 of its 34 games, including 11 times by a double-digit margin.
