FORT WAYNE, Ind. (12/18/12) -- The Detroit women's basketball team had everything working today – including an inside and outside game - as the Titans used a huge first-half run to upend the IPFW Mastodons, 88-58, on Tuesday morning at the Gates Sports Center.
Sophomore
Shareta Brown led all scorers with 34 points – her sixth career 30 point game and fourth this season - while adding nine rebounds. The nation's leading scorer coming into the game at 25.1 ppg., was 9-of-15 from the field and 15-of-20 at the free throw line.
Senior
Demeisha Fambro tied her career high with four 3-pointers en route to 15 points, while senior
Yar Shayok posted her 24th career double-double with a season-high 14 points and 13 rebounds.
The Titan offense was unstoppable again finishing the game shooting 60.0% from the field (30-of-50) with a season-high nine 3-pointers.
UDM got off to a slow start, but that was due to IPFW's three-point shooting as the Mastodons hit four early treys and took a 20-11 lead at the 13:24 mark of the first half.
That is when the Titans revved it up on offense and defense, ending the first stanza on a 32-8 run. It all started with a 9-0 spurt as Shayok got a pair of inside baskets and Fambro nailed a three and later added a free throw. Brown then came to the line and split a pair to knot the score at 20-all with 8:37 left.
The Mastodons hit a three to regain the lead and later held a one-point advantage, 26-25, but the red, white and blue then went on an 18-2 charge in the final 5:50 of the period to take a 15-point lead at the half. That scoring run was fueled by a trey from Brown, a pair of 3-pointers from freshman
Destiny Lavita-Stephens as well as a drive to the hole and the old fashioned three-point play from freshman
Tayelor McCalister.
The defense also held IPFW to 1-of-9 shooting in the last 5:50 of the half and just 36.0% in the period as the Mastodons were 9-of-25 from the field, but 6-of-9 from behind the arc.
The second half was all Detroit as the Titans never let their lead fall below 15, and with back-to-back buckets by Shayok and Brown followed by a free throw from Brown, UDM opened a 20-point advantage at 50-30.
The final spurt that completely put the game away came with Detroit up by 17, 52-35. A 13-1 run ensued, which featured three's from Fambro, sophomore
Audrey Matteson and freshman
Rosanna Reynolds, which propelled the Titans to a 29-point lead, 65-36, with 12:21 left.
The Mastodons would try to cut into that getting to within 23, but they were no match for Detroit as it increased its lead to as many as 32 late in the game.
Reynolds ended with seven points and a team-best four assists, while McCalister scored a season-high seven points and came away with four steals – the most steals by a Titan this season.
The Titans will be back in the friendly confines of Calihan Hall on Saturday as Detroit hosts Madonna on Women's Basketball Alumni Day. The game will start at 2:00 p.m., and all alumni are encouraged to come back as the game will include a tribute to the late Titan great Lisa Blackburn.
