TITANS KNOCK OFF #9/9 GREEN BAY
The Detroit Titans earned one of their biggest wins in school history as UDM went into the Kress Center and ended Green Bay's perfect season with a 70-58 victory.
The win also ended Green Bay's school record 40-game regular season winning streak as well as the Phoenix' 36-game regular season winning streak over Horizon League teams.
The Titans also prevented Green Bay from setting a new home-winning streak as the triumph put a stop to the Phoenix 27-game run in the Kress Center
TITANS EARN FIFTH WIN OVER A RANKED TEAM
The 70-58 victory over #9/9 Green Bay was the fifth victory in Titan history against a ranked opponent – with the last three coming in the last four years under head coach Autumn Rademacher.
It was also the first-ever win on the road against a ranked opponent in Titan history and the first win over a top-10 team since Dec. 5, 1981, when Detroit edged North Carolina State, 60-59.
2 FOR 20
Detroit had two players with 20+ points in a game for the second time this season as freshman
Shareta Brown had a game-high 24 points, while sophomore
Senee Shearer netted 23 at Green Bay.
The Titans also accomplished the feat at Ball State on Dec. 1 as Brown and junior
Demeisha Fambro each netted a game-high 21.
PLAYING PHYSICAL
Detroit saw four Green Bay players foul out of the game as UDM went to the free throw line a season-high 35 times. The Titans took advantage of that by making a season-best 29 free throws, including 16 in a row to end the game, with 12 coming in the final 1:18.
It was also the most free throws attempted since UDM went to the line 36 times in an overtime loss to Loyola last season, while the 29 makes were the most since the Titans connected on 31 against Cleveland State on Feb. 28, 2002.
LOOKING FOR 5 IN A ROW
Detroit will look to tie its season high by winning its fifth-straight game on Saturday.
Detroit ended December on a five-game winning streak.
PUTTING THE “D” IN DETROIT
The Detroit Titans have displayed some tough, aggressive defense in their last four games, holding each opponent to under its scoring average on the year as Cleveland State had 43, Loyola 59, UIC 57 and Green Bay 58.
UDM held the Vikings to just 25% shooting (13-of-52), including 20.8% in the first half (5-of-24) as well as just a 3-of-18 effort from three-point range.
The 13 field goals were the fewest by a Titan opponent since Marygrove had 11 in a 68-27 win last season.
The 43 points were also the fewest points allowed against a Division I school since a 52-43 triumph over Youngstown State last year.
The Titans then came back to hold Loyola - the second highest scoring team in the HL - to 59 points, including 22 in the first half. In the opening stanza, UDM held Loyola to just 7-of-31 shooting (22.6%) and outrebounded the Ramblers, 28-12.
Against UIC, Detroit saw the Flames shoot 50% in the first half, but then just 9-of-28 (32.1%) the rest of the way to overcome a seven-point halftime deficit. UIC's 17-second half points marked the fourth time this season an opponent has scored less than 20 points in a half, and the third time it has been 17 points.
In UDM's win over #9/9 Green Bay, the Titans held the Phoenix to its lowest point total of the season 58 points - about 17 points below its season average.
Detroit held the Phoenix to a season-low 29.9% from the field (20-of-67), including just a 7-of-31 showing (22.6%) in the first half.
MORE ABOUT THE D
After seeing Youngstown State nail 15 3-pointers in just 25 attempts (60.0%), the Titans have seen their last four opponents shoot 25-of-85 (29.4%) from beyond the arc, all Titan win.
Cleveland State was 3-of-18, Loyola 7-of-18, UIC 3-of-11 and Green Bay 12-of-38.
Detroit is currently fourth in the HL in three-point field goal defense (31.2%).
GETTING OFFENSIVE
With the 70 points scored in Detroit's win at Green Bay, the Titans tallied 70 or more for the 10th time this season, with eight of those games occurring in the last 14 contests.
Since Dec. 1, the Titans are averaging 70.1 points per game.
That offense has also helped Detroit post an 11-3 record in that span.
In Detroit's first nine games, it was averaging just 57.1 points per game, and all of last year, Detroit topped 70 points six times.
During this stretch, the Titans tallied a season-best 90 points against IPFW on Dec. 18, 87 at Ball State and 83 against Loyola.
The 90 points (53 in the second half) were the most by Detroit since posting 90 in a winning effort at Milwaukee last season and the most UDM has scored at home since a 94-67 victory against Cleveland State on Jan. 12, 2002.
REBOUNDS LEADING TO POINTS
The Titans' presence down low has led to some easy buckets in the paint as well as a plethora of second-chance points.
On the season, Detroit owns a 700-448 advantage in points in the paint.
Detroit dominated the inside against IPFW to the tune of a 62-26 advantage.
Five other games where the Titans have shown their size was against Bowling Green (28-10 margin), at Ball State (46-26), at Youngstown State (36-20), at Cleveland State (24-12) and most recently at Green Bay (30-8).
