DETROIT -- A three-game road swing will come to an end on Thursday as the Titan women's basketball team heads to Wright State in a game that could go a long way in determining who will finish with a higher seed in the Horizon League Tournament. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m., at the Ervin J. Nutter Center.
Detroit is 14-11 on the year and 10-3 in the HL, a game ahead of Wright State's 9-4 mark in the league. The Raiders are 16-9 overall, but with a loss to UDM earlier in the year, the Titans have a chance to take a two-game lead with a tiebreaker on their side for second place with just four games remaining in the regular season for both squads.
The Titans are on a five-game winning streak, matching their season high with a five game run they had in December. UDM has also won three in a row on the road and is coming off a 70-58 victory over then-No. 9 Green Bay as well as a come-from-behind victory at Milwaukee, 62-48.
Freshman
Shareta Brown – the reigning HL Player of the Week – leads the team in scoring and is fifth in the Horizon League at 16.6 points per game. She also tops the team and is eighth in the HL in rebounding at 8.7 rpg., as well as 10th in the nation with a league-best 56.3% field goal percentage.
Sophomore
Senee Shearer is second on the team in scoring at 10.9 ppg., which includes 50 3-pointers, good for third most in the conference. She is just five away from cracking the Titan top-10 list for the most 3-pointers in a season.
Fans can follow all the action with a live stats feed through NeuLion as well as view the game on the Horizon League Network. Followers of the Titans on twitter will also get updates throughout the game.
Detroit will be idle on Saturday before closing out the home portion of its regular season schedule next week as Cleveland State and Youngstown State come to town.
DETROIT VS. WRIGHT STATE
Wright State has won eight of the last 11 meetings, but Detroit won the match-up in the Motor City earlier this year, 75-64.
UDM is 9-9 all-time on the road in the series and has split the last two games in the Nutter Center.
ABOUT THE RAIDERS
The Raiders are currently in third place in the Horizon League with a 9-4 record and are 16-9 overall. WSU has lost two of the last three after a three-game winning streak.
The Raiders are led in scoring by freshman Kim Demmings at 16.5 points per game, sixth in the league. Senior Molly Fox is averaging a double-double at 15 points and 10 rebounds per game. Her 10 double-doubles are tied for the third-most in the HL.
WSU is third in the league in scoring at 66.1 ppg., while also topping the conference in field goal percentage defense (35.4%).
LAST TIME AGAINST WRIGHT STATE
On the strength of a 25-6 run midway through the game, the Detroit women's basketball team surged past Wright State, 75-64.
Sophomore
Megan Hatter led five Titans in double figures by tying her career-high with 16 points, while also pulling down eight rebounds. Hatter was 6-of-12 from the field with a career-high three 3-pointers.
Freshman
Shareta Brown had 13 points and nine boards despite foul trouble, while junior
Demeisha Fambro provided a spark off the bench with 13 points.
Detroit was down 27-23 with less than five minutes remaining left in the first half when the red, white and blue took the lead for good on an 11-0 run in front of its homecoming crowd.
Detroit stayed hot offensively coming out of the locker room with another 11-0 run to extend its advantage to 14, 45-31.
After a Raiders' basket, sophomore
Senee Shearer found the bottom of the net from three-point range and Detroit had its largest lead of the contest, 48-33, at the 15:56 mark.
Detroit never trailed the rest of the way, but a Wright State 17-6 run cut the Titans' lead to four, 54-50, with 7:47 remaining, but UDM would hold off the WSU comeback attempt.
YAR LIKES SEEING WRIGHT STATE
Junior
Yar Shayok has posted some good numbers against Wright State in her five career games against the Raiders.
She has averaged 10.0 points, 6.8 rebounds and 2.4 steals with a pair of double-doubles - both occurring last season.
LOOKING AHEAD
The Titans currently stand in second place in the Horizon League at 10-3 and with its win at Milwaukee on Saturday, Detroit is guaranteed to finish no lower than sixth place.
The top-six finish assures that UDM will not have to play in the opening round of the Horizon League Tournament on Monday, Mar. 5.
With a strong finish down the stretch, Detroit could be in position for a top-four seed in the conference postseason tournament and host a first round game on Wednesday, Mar. 7.
TITANS VICTORY TOTAL RISING
Detroit already has more wins than the 13 it had last year and with one more victory, UDM will have just its third season with 15 or more wins in the last 10 years.
The Titans were 17-14 in the 2009-10 season in head coach Autumn Rademacher's second year at UDM. They were also 15-14 during the 2003-04 campaign.
With another win, the Titans will match their best 14-game start in the Horizon League with the 11-3 record it had in 2010.
LOOKING FOR SIX IN A ROW
Detroit is currently on a five-game winning streak - its second five-game winning streak of the season.
UDM's last six-game winning streak came during the 2009-10 season, which is also the last time the Titans swept Wright State in a season.
HOT ON THE ROAD
Detroit has not just won five in a row, but it is also on a three-game road winning streak.
The Titans are 6-8 away from Calihan Hall on the year (taking into account three neutral site games), but are 6-3 in their last nine games on the road.
The last time UDM won three-straight true road games was during the 2004-05 season when the Titans defeated Loyola, IPFW and Cleveland State.
The last time the red, white and blue tallied four-straight on the road was in 1999-2000 when Detroit won at Florida A&M, Northern Illinois, UIC and Loyola.
Meanwhile, the last time the Titans won four-straight conference games on the road was in 1996-97 when UDM beat Butler, Wright State, Loyola and Cleveland State.
A HOST OF HONORS FOR BROWN
After another great week on the hardwood freshman
Shareta Brown was named the Horizon League Player of the Week for the third time this season.
The award was one of several honors Brown received for her outstanding performance last week. She was also honored with the College Sports Madness.com HL Player of the Week as well as its High-Major National Player of the Week. CollegeSports360.com tabbed her to its Primetime Performers Honor Roll and she was also named the National Jesuit Player of the Week by the Jesuit Basketball Spotlight.
It is the third time this year Brown has been named the Madness HL Player of the Week and the first time she has been tabbed the National High-Major Player. The CollegeSports360.com selection was also the first on the year.
Brown posted back-to-back 20-point games as the Titans ran their winning streak to five-straight games with victories over #9/9 Green Bay and Milwaukee.
The Titan rookie averaged 23.5 points and 7.5 rebounds in the Wisconsin road sweep, while shooting over 65% from the field and 77% from the free throw line.
She started the week by tallying 24 points and seven rebounds in the monumental victory at Green Bay. She was 6-of-11 from the field and a career-best 12-of-15 at the charity stripe.
Against Milwaukee, Brown was plagued with foul trouble in the first half scoring just two points in six minutes, but came back to lead UDM from a one-time 12-point deficit with 21 points and seven rebounds in the final 20 minutes. She ended the contest with a game-high 23 points shooting 9-of-12 from the field.
DOUBLE DIGIT COMEBACK
The Titans were down by 12 points twice to Milwaukee - the latest at 28-16 with 3:40 left in the first half - when UDM began to chip away and eventually pull off the comeback, 62-48.
The 12-point deficit was the biggest overcome on the season and the biggest since the Titans were down by 12 (57-45) at Eastern Michigan last year with six minutes left before ending the game on a 17-3 run to win, 62-60.
WHAT'S NOT MINE, I TAKE
Detroit came away with 10 steals at Milwaukee its last time out.
The last time Detroit had 10 steals in a game was on Dec. 20 when it had 12 against Eastern Michigan.
BROWN LEADING THE HL, TOP 10 IN THE NATION
In the latest NCAA stats, released on Monday, Feb. 13, freshman
Shareta Brown is currently leading the Horizon League and is 10th in the nation in field-goal percentage (56.3%).
She is also eighth in the HL and 76th in the country with 8.7 rebounds per game, while standing fifth in the league and 81st in scoring (16.6).
JONES ALMOST THERE
Senior
Jalesa Jones began the season in seventh place on the Titan all-time assists list, but she has climbed all the way to second place and is now just 11 away from the record.
She currently has 475 assists - passing the likes of current head coach Autumn Rademacher (439) and Jocelyn Boyd (451).
Jones now trails only Mary Lillie who posted 486 during her career (1978-82).
As a freshman, Jones had 84 assists, while collecting 159 as a sophomore and 112 last year. She has already posted 120 this year.
For her career, she is tallying 4.1 apg.
SENEE SIZZLING
Sophomore
Senee Shearer has found that comfort zone in her second year.
After getting off to a slow start, the second-year guard has transformed into one of the best scorers in the HL.
She has 13 double-digit scoring games and six 20-point games this season, including a four-game stretch where she set or tied her career highs with 15 against Michigan and 23 in back-to-back games versus IPFW and Eastern Michigan before establishing a new career high with 24 at Western Michigan. She also tallied back-to-back 20-point games against UIC (22) and at #9 Green Bay (23).
Prior to this recent streak, Shearer's only career double-digit game was a 13-point performance at IPFW last season.
She is currently second on the team in scoring and 17th in the HL at 10.9 points per game, and is averaging 13.6 ppg., in the last 16 games.
She has a team-best 50 3-pointers, more than twice then the next Titan on the year (
Chanahl Putnam - 20).
JJ TURNING IT ON
Senior
Jalesa Jones has played well in her senior year after a slow start.
In her last 16 games, she has been in double figures in scoring seven times while averaging 7.9 ppg.
She has also handed out five or more assists 10 times in that stretch, an average of 5.4, and has also pulled down five or more rebounds six times (4.0 rpg.)
PUTTING THE “D” IN DETROIT
The Detroit Titans have displayed some tough, aggressive defense in their last five games, holding each opponent to under its scoring average on the year as Cleveland State had 43, Loyola 59, UIC 57, Green Bay 58 and Milwaukee 48.
During this five-game winning streak, the Titans have held their opponent to just 53.0 points per game, 32.7% from the field and 29.5% from three. UDM has also forced 13.0 turnovers per game and outrebounded the opposition by nearly a +10 margin (41.2-32.8).
UDM held the Vikings to just 25% shooting (13-of-52), including 20.8% in the first half (5-of-24) as well as just a 3-of-18 effort from three-point range.
The 13 field goals were the fewest by a Titan opponent since Marygrove had 11 in a 68-27 win last season.
The 43 points were also the fewest points allowed against a Division I school since a 52-43 triumph over Youngstown State last year.
The Titans then came back to hold Loyola - the second highest scoring team in the HL - to 59 points, including 22 in the first half. In the opening stanza, UDM held Loyola to just 7-of-31 shooting (22.6%) and outrebounded the Ramblers, 28-12.
Against UIC, Detroit saw the Flames shoot 50% in the first half, but then just 9-of-28 (32.1%) the rest of the way to overcome a seven-point halftime deficit. UIC's 17-second half points marked the fourth time this season an opponent has scored less than 20 points in a half, and the third time it has been 17 points.
In UDM's win over #9/9 Green Bay, the Titans held the Phoenix to its lowest point total of the season 58 points - about 17 points below its season average.
Detroit held the Phoenix to a season-low 29.9% from the field (20-of-67), including just a 7-of-31 showing (22.6%) in the first half.
In the latest game at Milwaukee, the Titans saw the Panthers hit 12 of their first 27 shots before the defense clamped down forcing UWM to shoot just 7-of-31 (22.5%) the rest of the way along with 20 turnovers in the 62-48 triumph.
