INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.-- Sophomore Ray McCallum (Beverly Hills, Mich.) and senior Eli Holman (Richmond, Calif.) each earned accolades as the Horizon League released its postseason honorees Monday afternoon. McCallum was named to the All-HL First Team while Holman was tabbed the league's Sixth Man of the Year.
The duo helped lead Detroit to an 11-win Horizon League schedule, its most wins in league play since the 1998-99 season. The Titans won nine of 11 down the stretch to vault into a tie for third place and nab the third seed in the league postseason tournament which begins tomorrow.
McCallum-- the HL Preseason Player of the Year-- followed up his stellar rookie campaign with another solid year as a sophomore. The 6-foot-2 guard currently leads the Titans in scoring (15.1 ppg), assists (3.9 apg) and steals (44) for the second year in a row and has started all 31 games thus far. He was a John Wooden Award Top 50 selection (top NCAA player), a Lou Henson Award Top 25 member (top mid-major) and was a Bob Cousy Award top 20 (best NCAA point guard) selection.
Holman came off-the-bench in 19 of 21 games this season and contributed 11.0 points and 7.0 rebounds per game. In his first game back, the senior chalked-up a season-high 21 points to go along with seven rebounds and four blocks in just 19 minutes in the blowout win vs. Western Michigan on Dec. 8. He's tallied three double-doubles this season to give him 27 for his career and sits just 28 points shy of reaching 1,000 career points in a Detroit uniform heading into the postseason.
Valparaiso junior forward Ryan Broekhoff was named the league's Player of the Year and his coach, Bryce Drew, picked up Coach of the Year honors in leading the Crusaders to their first-ever HL regular season championship. Wright State's Julius Mays was the Newcomer of the Year and Butler's Ronald Nored earned the Defensive Player of the Year.
Detroit (18-13, 11-7 HL) will host the 10th-seeded Loyola Ramblers Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. at Calihan Hall in the opening round of the Horizon League Tourament. The winner will advance to a quarterfinal game against the winner of the Youngstown State/Green Bay matchup, held at top-seed Valparaiso Friday.
