WARREN, Mich. -- It was a night to remember the accomplishments of a great season. A night to say thanks to all of those who contributed to the Titan success and one last time to honor the seniors who helped build this program from a last place team to a championship contender as the Detroit women's basketball team held its annual team banquet.
The event was held at Juliano's in Warren with Greg Russell handling the emcee duties.
After a quick opening introduction, the invocation was given by
Sr. Beth Finster S.S.J. After that, the largest crowd ever on hand for the women's banquet enjoyed a great dinner before the awards portion of the night.
Head coach Autumn Rademacher then took over the microphone for the awards. Before each player was honored, Coach Rademacher gave two special awards to Gerry Fitzgerald and Sister Beth for their loyalty to the program. Sister Beth is known as the Titans biggest fan, traveling with the team as well as on her own in order to see the squad in action, while Gerry is the team's bus driver who always makes sure the Titans are taken care of on the road.
Each student-athlete then received their runner-up trophy from the Horizon League Championship and a commemorative scrapbook highlighting the season, full of pictures, write-ups from the website and articles in the newspaper.
Freshman
Shareta Brown took home MVP and Newcomer of the Year honors after posting a record-breaking season, one in which she broke the school record with 611 points and led the Horizon League in field goal percentage. She also officially received her awards from the HL in the Co-Newcomer of the Year and First Team All-League.
Junior
Yar Shayok was presented with her Horizon League Sixth Player of the Year honor and she also shared the Titan Role Model Award with sophomore
Megan Hatter. Meanwhile, sophomore
Senee Shearer was named Detroit's Most Improved Player.
The last two players to be honored were the seniors in
Lauren Allen and
Jalesa Jones. After their introduction, both players were handed the stage for a senior speech and both came to tears when talking about their careers as a Titan.
Allen earned the Coaches Award for her dedication and her hard work, which was her staple as a Titan. Jones received her record breaking ball signifying her as the new Titan leader in assists, games played and starts. She was also named the Defensive Player of the Year as well as the Bus Driver Award winner. The last honor was for her production as the team's point guard for four years.
