HLN Awards Show
INDIANAPOLIS -- The awards are in and two Titans received high accolades as freshman
Shareta Brown (Pontiac, MI/Grand Blanc) and junior
Yar Shayok (Ottawa, ON/Hillcrest) were honored as the Horizon League released its 2012 postseason awards.
The outstanding freshman Brown was also named to the Horizon League First Team and All-Newcomer Team as she shared the HL's Newcomer of the Year with Wright State's Kim Demmings.
Her selection to the first team was the first for a Detroit student-athlete since Brigid Mulroy earned the honor in 2010 and the first for a Titan freshman in school history. She also becomes the fifth Titan to earn the conference's Newcomer of the Year award and the first since Shayok was tabbed in 2010.
Brown had an amazing year putting her name in the Titan record books as well as among the conference leaders on the season. She led the HL in field goal percentage (55.7%) - which currently stands ninth in the nation - and offensive rebounding (3.9), while finishing fifth in scoring (17.1) and eighth in rebounding (9.0). She also tied for third in the league with 11 20-point games and was tied for fourth with 12 double-doubles.
She broke the Titan record for points in a season by a freshman (512) as well as in a game when she tallied 31 at Loyola. Her 512 points are the eighth most in school history and she will end up as the first freshman to lead the team in scoring since head coach Autumn Rademacher in 1994.
Shayok continues to pile up honors on her collegiate resume as she added the Horizon League's Sixth Player of the Year. In her career, she has been selected the HL Newcomer of the Year (2010), All-Newcomer Team (2010), Second Team All-League (2010) and All-Defensive Team (2011).
She was third on the team in scoring at 7.5 points per game as well as second on the Titans pulling down 6.9 rebounds per contest. She shot 42.6% from the field, good for second on squad, while averaging 1.1 steals and 1.1 assists. She posted three double-doubles on the year and now has 23 for her career.
Other award winners on the Year included Julie Wojta of Green Bay who was tabbed both the Player of the Year and the Defensive Player of the Year, while Phoenix coach Matt Bollant was honored as the Coach of the Year.
Detroit will be back in action on Wednesday when the Titans host a Horizon League Championship quarterfinals game with tip-off slated for 7:00 p.m. UDM – the #2 seed – will face the winner of #7 Cleveland State and #10 Youngstown State, with that contest slated for tonight at 7:00 p.m.
