Horizon League Release

DETROIT -- A day after the Horizon League released its postseason honors, the Titans received a few more accolades as freshman Shareta Brown (Pontiac, MI/Grand Blanc) was named the HL Player of the Week.

It is the fourth time this year that Brown has earned the weekly conference award. She averaged 18.0 points and 12.0 rebounds per game in the Titans' pair of road wins at Butler and at Valparaiso. She was 6-fo-8 from the field finishing with 16 points against the Bulldogs and then tallied her 12th double-double with 20 points and 15 rebounds – along with a career-high three blocks – at Valparaiso.

As for postseason awards, College Sports Madness.com released its award winners and three Titans earned accolades, led by head coach Autumn Rademacher who was tabbed the Horizon League Coach of the Year.

In her fourth season at her alma mater, Rademacher guided the Titans to an 18-12 record and a 14-4 mark in the Horizon League, good for second place. The 18 wins are the most by a UDM squad in the last 11 years, while the 14 victories in conference play tied a program high. All of that was accomplished from a team that lost its top two leading scorers from a year ago and started the season at 0-6 and then 1-8.

Brown earned not one, not two, but three honors from the website, including the Horizon League and the National High Major Freshman of the Year. She was also selected All-Horizon League First Team. Brown started the year with 25 points and 13 rebounds in her collegiate debut at Indiana State and never looked back, ending the year fifth in the league in scoring at 17.1 ppg., and eighth with 9.0 rpg. She topped the league and was top-10 in the nation with a 55.7 field goal percentage and posted 12 double-doubles and 11 20-point games.

Sophomore Senee Shearer (Detroit, MI/Pershing) also found her name on the honors list receiving Fourth Team All-Conference. Shearer was second on the team and 17th in the HL in scoring at 11.4 per night, and that was after averaging just 2.1 ppg., through the first eight games of the season. She ended up scoring in double digits in 16 of the last 22, which included seven games of 20 or more points. She finished third in the conference with 68 3-pointers as well with 2.3 per game. Her 68 treys on the year are currently fourth in Titan history.

Detroit will open the conference tournament on Wednesday when the second-seeded Titans host seventh-seeded Cleveland State in the Horizon League Championship quarterfinals. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m., at Calihan Hall.
