DETROIT -- It was another event to showcase the great student-athletes that attend the University and also a chance to recognize a number of them with department accolades as the Annual Titan Academic and Athletic Honors Luncheon was held Thursday at Andiamo on the Detroit Riverfront.
“The Titan Academic and Athletic Honors Luncheon is always one of the highlights of the year for me,” said Associate Vice President and Athletic Director Keri Gaither. “I look at all these student-athletes and think what great role models they are in the way they represent the University.”
Senior
Emily Boissonneault (Brooklin, ON/Donald A. Wilson) of the women's lacrosse team and
Aviram Campbell (Yale, MI/Yale) of the men's track and field program received the highest accolades on the afternoon in the prestigious President's Award, given to the Titans' most outstanding senior student-athletes. Both received the honor from University President Antoine M. Garibaldi, Ph.D., who attended the event and gave high remarks about the importance of athletics and all the hard work it takes to be a student-athlete.
Boissonneault came to Detroit to help jump start the lacrosse program, but she has done a lot more than that. She will go down as not just the leading scorer in school history, but in NCAA history as she is in the top 20 all-time in Division I with 229 goals and 254 career points. She also plays on the defensive side as her 139 caused turnovers rank 10th all-time in NCAA history. She is a three-time All-NLC performer who was tabbed the National Lacrosse Conference Attack MVP as a freshman. A leader on and off the field, she is a two-time team captain, an active member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, where she serves as Vice President, and was chosen to attend the 2011 NCAA Student-Athlete Leadership Forum.
Campbell has made his mark for the Titans since he arrived as a freshman and has been a consistent scorer in both the Horizon League Indoor and Outdoor Championships. He was the Horizon League runner-up in the 110-meter hurdles at the 2011 HL Outdoor Championships, just 0.1 seconds off the Titan all-time record. During the 2011-12 indoor season alone, he set three personal records in the 60-meter hurdles, the 200 meters and the 500 meters. Other events he has scored include taking fifth in the 400-meter hurdles in the outdoor championships in 2011 and runner-up in the indoor 60-meter hurdles. He was the Titan Track Student-Athlete Award winner in 2011 and has been a consistent member of the UDM Athletic Directors Honor Roll and the Horizon League's Fall and Spring Academic Honor Roll. Just this past October, he was also invited to attend the 2011 NCAA Student-Athlete Leadership Forum in Chicago.
“Aviram and Emily are wonderful representatives of what our student-athletes strive to be and they are very deserving of this honor,” said Gaither. “They have distinguished themselves in competition, but even more impressive are their academic achievements and leadership qualities. Emily and Aviram both have received numerous academic accolades and their outstanding leadership qualities and service work were recognized nationally when the NCAA invited them to attend the NCAA Student-Athlete Leadership Forum this past November.”
Several other major individual awards were presented on Thursday. Senior
Vushaun Landrum (Windsor, ON/Sandwich Secondary) of the men's track and field team and senior
Alexandra Suschak (Broadview Heights, OH/Brecksville Broadview Heights) of the women's soccer program were named the men's and women's Titan Club Award winner for athletic and academic excellence. Suschak anchored an impressive defensive backfield for four years helping the Titans record 12 victories this past season, the most since 2004. She was named to The National Soccer Coaches Association of America Women's College Scholar All-America Third Team - just the second Titan to ever be named to the All-America Scholar Team - as well as to the Division I All-Great Lakes First Team as a senior.
Landrum captured the 2011 Horizon League Titles in both the indoor and outdoor 100-meters and set the school record in the event. He also has three runner-up efforts in his career at the league meet. He is top three in school history in the 60-meters and 200-meters and fifth in the long jump. He has also been a multi-time member of the Detroit Athletic Director's Honor Roll and has earned a spot on both the Horizon League's Fall and Spring Academic Honor Roll.
Sophomore basketball standout
Ray McCallum (Beverly Hills, MI/Detroit Country Day) and softball sophomore
Hannah Klenk (Hamilton, MI/Hamilton) were awarded the Fr. Norbert Huetter, S.J. Award for attitude, dedication and leadership. Both players are known to be the hardest workers on the team and always come to every workout, practice and game with the right attitude it takes to help the Titans win.
That award was the first of two for McCallum as he was also named the Titan Newcomer of the Year for the 2010-11 season. As a freshman, he capped a phenomenal rookie campaign by earning the Horizon League's Newcomer of the Year and he also became the first Titan true freshman to ever be honored on an All-Horizon League Team when he was selected All-HL Second Team. As a freshman, he led the Titans in scoring (13.5 ppg), assists (4.9 apg) and steals (54).
Sophomore
Lindsey Lammers (Milan, MI/Milan) was the 2010-11 Newcomer of the Year on the women's side. Lammers played in all 12 tournaments as a rookie and was second on the team in scoring average. She compiled 12 rounds in the 70's and was in the top 20 seven times, while placing in the top 10 on four occasions. A member of the Athletic Director's Honor Roll, she also earned her way onto the National Golf Coaches Association Women's All-American Scholar Team.
Men's lacrosse sophomore
Shayne Adams (St. Catharines, ON/Denis Morris) and women's track and field senior
Amanda Campbell (Lockport, NY/Lockport) received the Dad Butler Award for their determination in recovering from an injury. Adams tore his ACL in the MAAC semifinals victory last year and has come back to lead UDM with 27 goals this season. Campbell was diagnosed with cancer last year at the beginning of track season and after undergoing surgery and treatment, she returned to full competition this year, scoring for Detroit at the Horizon League Championship Indoor Pentathlon.
Boissonneault also took home a second honor in the Larry Bleach Award for excellence in strength and conditioning along with senior
Eli Holman (Richmond, CA/Richmond) of the Titan men's basketball team. Both student-athletes have put in countless hours working and training to constantly improve their games and their final season in the Motor City has certainly benefited from all that hard work and dedication.
The recipient of the 2012 Team Excellence Award after posting a 3.522 cumulative team GPA was the Titan women's golf team. In addition to winning the UDM Team Excellence Award, the women's golf team also receives the Horizon League “Raise Your Sights” award, which recognizes the highest men's and women's team GPAs for Horizon League sponsored sports. This year joining the women's golf team as a recipient of the Horizon League “Raise Your Sights” Award was the UDM men's golf team with a cumulative team GPA of 3.258.
Senior
Alyssa Korson (Suttons Bay, MI/Lake Leelanau St. Mary's) of the women's soccer team took home the only other honor on the day with the Horizon League Sportsmanship Award, given to a student-athlete or team who best exemplifies the true essence of sportsmanship and ethical conduct.
Detroit also honored 26 student-athletes for their work in the classroom as they became the latest group to earn the most significant academic award—the Four Year Athletic Director's Honor Roll. Those individuals have been members of the A.D. honor roll for every semester while at UDM, which means they have earned at least a 3.0 GPA for every semester they have participated in college athletics.
