HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. – Sophomore
Lindsey Lammers (Milan, MI/Milan) capped off a remarkable comeback to the links with a Horizon League Championship on Sunday as the league tournament came to a close with Detroit finishing in a tie for second place.
“It was an incredible performance and fun to watch,” said head coach
Terri Anthony-Ryan. “The girls played hard and they played in really hot conditions, but never gave up.”
UDM had a three-day total of 1009 (342, 332, 335) tying Loyola for second place. It is the second-straight year that the Titans were runner-up as Butler won the team championship with a 984.
Lammers – who missed all of the spring season due to an injury – was tied for first after round one and led by one heading into the final round. She started out slow with a 6-over on the first nine holes, but settled down to shoot a 2-over the rest of the way, including five-straight pars to end it, finishing with a 238 (79, 78, 81).
She then went to a playoff with Loyola's Ann Vrdolyak and won it on the very first hole, a par 5. She chipped it within 12 feet on her third shot and then won the title with a birdie putt from there. She is only the second Titan in school history to win medalist honors at the league tournament with
Alainna Stefan capturing the title in 2010.
“It was really amazing,” said Ryan. “She got to 17 and was two strokes behind, but she had a nice par, while Ann had a double. I told her that she was even on 18 and she had another par and got ready for the playoff.”
It was her third title on the year (Dayton and NIU Huskie Classic) and her second in a playoff with her other win at the Dayton Fall Invitational back in October. It was also her third playoff for a medalist honors on the season.
Freshman
Olivia Richards (Waterford, Ontario/Simcoe Compostie) posted a top-10 finish tying for ninth with a 253. Richards began the weekend with an 89, but made an 11-shot improvement in round two before carding an 86 on the final 18.
Junior
Collette Hansen's (West Olive, MI/Grand Haven) 259 (86, 86, 87) was good enough to record her third top-20 effort at the HL Championship in her career by placing 19th. Junior
Allison Sears (Clio, MI/Powers) shared 23rd with a 263 (88, 94, 81), which included tying for the team lead with an 81 on the day, taking 13 strokes off her score on Saturday. Sophomore
Christina Thorne (Kingston, ON/Bayridge) rounded out the line-up with an 89 for a three-day total of 272 and 40th place.
“It was tough out there for everyone and even though our goal is a championship, I think everyone improved playing in these conditions with the wind and heat,” added Ryan.
Joining Lammers on the All-Tournament squad was Vrdolyak, Butler's Clare Cornelius (239), Allison Mitzel (240) of Youngstown State, Butler's Michele Nash (245) and Isabella Lambert (248) and Youngstown State's Sarah Heimlich (250).
