DETROIT -- The women's track and field team celebrated senior day on its lone home event of the 2012 outdoor season. The 7th annual home dual with Oakland saw the Titans come away with a 111-77 win.
Susan Kalkstein was the lone female representative from this year's senior class. She was recognized with a short ceremony following the annual open mile event.
Detroit has hosted the dual with Oakland for the seventh year now in 2012 and the Titans have won the head-to-head match-up five times. In the second outdoor track and field competition of the season, it was a chance for many of the Titans to work on their events.
“Today is a good step for us in the right direction and a chance to get second reps in your events. Competing to win in a smaller format helps some kids form some strategies and they find that they can do it when the pressure is on,” said men's and women's track and field head coach Guy Murray.
In the women's hammer throw,
Allyson Koglin launched the hammer 187 feet and eight inches to a first place finish.
In the women's shot put, the Titans placed one-two in the event as

Koglin made it a double on the day winning the discus throw with a throw of 118 feet. She was not done there as she also took home the javelin crown with a throw of 86 feet, 10 inches.
In the triple jump,
Whitney Rogers placed first with a leap of 36 feet, seven inches and
Kayla Zauner came in third. In the women's long jump, Zauner and Rogers again placed as Zauner came in second and Rogers was third.

In the 100m hurdles,

In the 400m dash, Detroit took the top three spots as
Malita Rutherford was first at 1:01.53,
Shannon Marchant was second at 1:03.08 and
Lindsay Smetzler was behind her at 1:04.74.
The Titans also fared well in the 100m as
Nikia Duncan (12.53) and
Nicole Meisner (12.60) were the top two finishers. In the 200m, the same Detroit runners were one-two but Meisner beat out Duncan with a time of 25.87 to 26.20 for Duncan.
The last event of the day saw the 4x400m relay team of
Liz Arroyo,
Hana Hunt, Marchant and Rutherford crossed the line first with a time of 4:08.50.
The Tommy Titan kid's race for those nine and under was a fun event for all. The 100m dash against Tommy and the Oakland Grizzly made for a lighter event on the day. The winner of the kid's race was Ethan Rice with a time of 16.90.
The other popular event was the open mile that saw a number of students, alumni and fans participate. The winner of that was Ryan Ayala who finished with a time of 4:46.05.
