DETROIT -- The mascots of sports teams have added countless hours of entertainment to sporting events for years. On Friday afternoon, the inaugural Mascot Home Run Challenge at Campus Martius Park, allowed six local mascots the chance to continue to entertain fans in a friendly competition, including the University of Detroit Mercy's Tommy Titan as the Detroit Sports Commission (DSC) hosted the event in the sunshine of downtown Detroit.

Tommy Titan was joined by Paws from the Detroit Tigers; Hooper from the Detroit Pistons; Roary from the Detroit Lions; Clawzz from Oakland University and the newest mascot in the Motor City, Champ, with the name unveiled today to the DSC's mascot.

Local media personalities Lorne Plant (Host/Producer of the weekly High School Sports Show STATE CHAMPS!) and Terry Foster (Detroit News & WXYT-FM 97.1 The Ticket) were on hand to offer play-by-play analysis of the entire event. Mascots had the opportunity to swing at five wiffle balls off a tee in a winner-take-all format.

Tommy Titan made adjustments after his first few swings and had a few balls reach the fence but he could not go the distance. He was speechless when asked for an interview after the event. Clawzz, Roary, and Champ were the lone mascots to launch a ball over the fences of Campus Martius Park as the competition went to a hit-off between the three. The final round saw Clawzz come up with the win but in an act of great sportsmanship, offered the trophy up to Champ to officially welcome the newest Detroit mascot.
