15 Titans Selected To HL Spring Academic All-League Teams

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Horizon League released its 2012 Spring Academic All-League teams today and what a day it was for the University of Detroit Mercy as 15 student-athletes were honored for their academic and athletic excellence, the second most out of any team in the conference.

In all, 92 student-athletes were selected across eight sports based on their successes in competition and in the classroom. Student-athlete nominees were voted upon by the League's faculty athletics representatives and sports information directors.

Leading the way in the selections was the men's track and field team, which had had eight members tabbed All-Academic, the most in men's track and field. Those honorees included; seniors Aviram Campbell (Yale, MI/Yale), Alex Harris (Huntington Woods, MI/Shrine), Vushaun Landrum (Windsor, ON/Sandwich Secondary) and Erik Westbrook (Fremont, MI/Fremont) and juniors Edwin Gay (Grosse Pointe, MI/GP South), Taylor Hennrick (Traverse City, MI/St. Francis), Vince Lefler (Midland, MI/Midland) and Chris Smalley (Gladwin, MI/Gladwin). Landrum and Hennrick are on the list for the second consecutive year, while Hennrick, Smalley and Westbrook were also named to the 2012 HL Winter All-Academic.

The women's side was represented with a pair of selections in senior Amanda Campbell (Lockport, NY/Lockport) and junior Katrina Oberski (Clyde, MI/Port Huron). Both of those student-athletes earned the award for the second time this season as they were tabbed HL Winter All-Academic. Oberski was also Spring All-Academic performer last year.

Junior Collette Hansen (West Olive, MI/Grand Haven) and sophomore Lindsey Lammers (Milan, MI/Milan) were named on the women's golf All-Academic squad, tying for the most by a school in the conference.  Both golfers – who were All-League during the season – took home the academic honor for the first time in their careers.

Junior Simon Reyers (Kingston, ON/Holy Cross) of men's golf – another All-League Titan during the year- was selected for the first time in his career as was junior Alex Latosinsky (Sarnia, ON/St. Christopher's) of men's tennis and sophomore Sara Cupp (Hartland, MI/Milford) of the UDM softball team.

The Horizon League recognizes student-athletes with seasonal Academic All-League Teams in each of its 19 championship sports. To be eligible for Academic All-Horizon League consideration, a student-athlete must have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 or higher (based on a 4.00 scale) and have completed at least one year at the member institution, having earned 24 semester-hour or 36 quarter-hour credits.
