SKILLMAN, N.J. -- The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) annually recognizes top teams and individuals on all levels in both academics and athletics and the latest academic awards featured the University of Detroit Mercy men's tennis team capturing the 2012 ITA All-Academic Team Award in addition to five individuals recognized as Scholar Athletes.

"This award shows that our team has been able to keep focused and work hard in the classroom," said UDM men's tennis head coach Grant Asher. "The guys should be proud of the work they did both on and off the court this past year and it is a good award for us to earn."

In order to be selected for the All-Academic Team Award, teams must have a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or above. The men finished with a GPA of 3.42 in the winter semester and have a cumulative GPA of. 3.29. The requirements for the individual award winners maintain that student-athletes have a cumulative GPA above 3.5 and have spent at least two semesters at the institution.

Mike Basha, Chris Cheung, Alex Latosinsky, Pablo Nunez, and Nick Tolomei all earned ITA Scholar-Athlete status. Tolomei led the way in the second semester achieving a 3.88 GPA.

Asher recently completed his fourth full year as head coach with the Titans and has had the team in the Horizon League Tournament in three of his four years at the helm. This year's squad was the fifth seed in the tournament and fell in the first round by a 4-3 score to the No. 4 seed from Cleveland State.
