Halabi Named ITA Scholar Athlete

Women's ITA Honorees

SKILLMAN, N.J. -- Sophomore Raina Halabi of the University of Detroit Mercy women's tennis team was recognized as an Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Scholar Athlete for excellent work in the classroom during the 2011-12 season.

In order to be a Scholar Athlete, individuals must have a cumulative GPA above 3.5 and have spent at least two semesters at their current institution.

“Raina improved her game on the court this year but academics are equally important and it is good for our program to have her earn this achievement,” said UDM women's tennis head coach Pjotrs Necajevs.

Halabi holds a 3.7 cumulative GPA and had a second semester GPA of 3.94.

On the court, Halabi paired with Chloe Karoub at No. 2 doubles for a team-best 6-2 record in conference matches. Halabi spent most of her season at the No. 1 singles position that included a stretch of three wins in four conference matches over Wright State, Valparaiso, and Green Bay.

The Titans earned a berth in the Horizon League Tournament's as the No. 6 seed and a first round match-up with No. 3 seed Milwaukee this season. The Panthers had defeated Detroit 7-0 a week earlier in Wisconsin to close the regular season. UDM came back with a monumental first round upset and a 4-3 win to advance to the Horizon League Semifinals for the sixth straight season. The 2012 campaign came to a close with a 4-0 defeat to Cleveland State in that second round.
