Quarrell, Lupenec Post Game Video
DETROIT (8/20/2012) -- Junior
Kaitlyn Quarrell scored three goals in a span of 10:57 in the second half as the University of Detroit Mercy women's soccer team (1-1) found its offensive swagger with a 4-0 win over Canisius (0-2) on Monday afternoon at Titan Field. It was the first career hat trick for Quarrell and her third career multi-goal game.
“Overall I'm happy with the performance,” said head coach
Mike Lupenec.
“I think at the beginning of the game, we struggled with Canisius playing a 3-4-3 in regards to which girls defensively were picking up certain players on their team. After we got adapted after 20 minutes, we slowed the game down and created a lot of scoring opportunities in the first half and then took over the second half.”
The Titans came out with a 7-2 shooting advantage in the first half and upped it to a 19-5 total outshooting the Golden Griffins 12-3 in the second frame.
She netted her first at 56:04 taking a long cross from
Mary Leone on the right side of the field. Quarrell was on the left side of the six-yard box and tapped it in. Her second came as she found a loose ball just inside the 18-yard frame and fired it into the upper right corner of the net for goal number two. Her final tally came at the 67:01 mark as newcomer
Haley Burtraw cut towards the net on the left goal line and made a great pass to Quarrell in front of the net who made no mistake.
“We played well together as a team and definitely our preseason [work] was shown off in this game,” said Quarrell.
Senior
Janae Paveglio added the fourth Titan goal on the day as she headed in a cross from
Jennifer Borawski. Borawski played the ball from the right side into the middle of the 18-yard box and Paveglio put it in making it 4-0 Detroit.

Nora Abolins made three saves in goal for the Titans capturing her first shutout of the season.
