Horizon League Release
2012-13 UDM Women's Basketball Schedule
INDIANAPOLIS (8/24/2012) -- The game that decided the 2012 Horizon League Champion will serve as the conference opener this season as Detroit visits Green Bay in early January. The HL office made the announcement today with the release of the 2012-13 women's basketball conference schedule.
The Titans – fresh off their first 20-win season and postseason appearance since 1997 – will head to Green Bay and the Kress Events Center for an early season showdown on Tuesday, Jan. 8.
Last year, UDM had a lead early in the second half in the title game, but ended up falling short, 66-53. During the regular season, Detroit handed the Phoenix a 70-58 defeat, ending Green Bay's perfect season as well as its school record 40-game regular season winning streak, its 36-game regular season winning streak over Horizon League teams and its 27-game home winning streak.
The contest at Green Bay is also the beginning of three straight on the road with the Titans traveling to Cleveland State (Jan. 12) and Wright State (Jan. 16).
In an ironic note, the first three games of the year are against the three teams UDM played in the Horizon League Tournament last season as CSU was the seventh seed in a quarterfinals bout, while WSU was the third seed posting a 21-13 mark on the year and a 12-6 ledger in league play when the Titans ousted the Raiders in the semifinals.
After opening HL play with three road games, Detroit will play three in a row at home starting on Jan. 24 as the Titans host Jesuit-rival Loyola before entertaining UIC two days later. Cleveland State will then come to the Motor City on Jan. 31, ending the regular season match-up with the Vikings before Detroit even plays Milwaukee, Youngstown State or Valparaiso.
UDM's first action against Milwaukee will be on the road on Feb. 2, which is followed by a road affair at YSU on Feb. 7. After that trip, Detroit will play five of its next seven conference games on Dick Vitale Court at Calihan Hall – which includes Green Bay on Thursday, Feb. 28 - before ending the regular season at Valparaiso on Mar. 9.
The Titans return three starters and eight letterwinners from last year's Horizon League runner-up squad, including Co-Newcomer of the Year and HL first teamer
Shareta Brown and the League's Sixth Player of the Year
Yar Shayok. UDM was 20-14 on the season and tied a school record with 14 conference victories to finish in second place with a 14-4 HL mark, earning a bid to the WNIT.
Detroit's non-conference full schedule will be released in the near future.
