A Match Made In The Motor City

DETROIT (8/5/12) -- The Titans are known for many things, great student-athletes, championship athletics and outstanding graduation rates, but you can add another to that list in matchmaker. On Saturday, the latest Titan couple tied the knot in former cross country and track & field standout Kevin Smalley and former women's basketball player Sierra Spaude.

Friends and family gathered at Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Sturgeon Bay, WI – Spaude's hometown – to see the Titans come together as Mr. and Mrs. Smalley.

Both graduated in 2011 as Kevin majored in bio-chemistry, while Sierra earned a criminal justice degree.

Sierra came to Detroit in 2008 after transferring from Wisconsin-La Crosse. After sitting out that year, she helped the Titans turn their program around during the 2009-10 campaign as UDM posted a 17-14 record, including a 14-4 mark in the Horizon League to tie for second. She averaged 5.7 points and 2.6 rebounds in 20 games with a season-high 20 against Youngstown State, and had nine points and five rebounds in Detroit's 71-55 victory at home over No. 23/22 Green Bay on Feb. 4, 2010, ending a huge 21-4 second-half Titan run with a trey to put Detroit ahead 61-51.

She would play in two games the next year before a foot injury ended her collegiate career.

Kevin was a four-year letterwinner in cross country & track and field, and was just the 18th runner in Titan history to run in four NCAA Cross Country Regionals. He was part of UDM's Horizon League runner-up indoor track & field squad as a senior and took home numerous team accolades during his time, including the Student-Athlete Award and Coaches Award in cross country and the Most Improved Award in indoor track. He left holding top 10 times in Titan history in the steeplechase (9:48.61 - #5) and 1000-meters (2:32.92 - #9).

He was also a two-time All-Horizon League Academic honoree in indoor track & field as a sophomore and junior.
