DETROIT (9/16/2012)
--  Mike Lupenec is the only head coach the University of Detroit Mercy women's soccer team has ever known. Now in his 20th season, Lupenec recently hit a milestone capturing his 175th career victory in the team's 4-0 victory over Canisius on Aug. 20, 2012.

“Coach Lupenec is one of our longest tenured coaches. His commitment to our academic and athletic program has been key in building a strong foundation and legacy for Titan women's soccer,” said University of Detroit Mercy Associate V.P. & Athletic Director Keri Gaither. “It is an outstanding achievement to reach 175 career wins and to have them all here at Detroit is terrific. I am proud of Mike and congratulate him on this accomplishment.”

Lupenec has an overall record of 177-167-31 - including a 64-44-15 overall conference record - after the team's home non-conference win over IUPUI on Sunday afternoon.

His current assistant coach with the women's team is Jamie Huff with 2012 marking his 11th season on the sidelines with Lupenec. Huff has been with Lupenec for 48% of his overall wins and 55% in the conference, including the Horizon League Championship season in 2004 which also resulted in the team's lone NCAA Tournament appearance. That year, UDM advanced in the first round of the tournament with a 3-2 win over Michigan.

Lupenec also saw another championship season in 1995 with a 4-0 triumph over Milwaukee in the MCC Championship. The 1995 squad finished 15-5 overall in just the third season of women's soccer at Detroit, but did not earn the automatic NCAA Tournament bid the Horizon League boasts now.

Lupenec is a two-time recipient of the conference's Coach of the Year award in both 2000 and 2005. He has had 13 different student-athletes receive All-Conference first team awards, including four-time winners Gwen Kilfoy (1998-2001), Tanya Tiselj (1999-2002), Allison Epple (2002-2005), and Mary Parker (2003-2006). Parker also became just the third Titan to ever win the prestigious Cecil M. Coleman Medal of Honor, the Horizon League's highest individual accolade.

In all of his 20 seasons at Detroit, there have been just two seasons (1994, 1996) where one of his players was not selected to the conference All-Newcomer team and four times, he has had three or more players on the All-Newcomer squad (1993, 2001, 2005, and 2010).

Last year, Lupenec led the Titans to the Horizon League Semifinals and the third highest win total in program history as Detroit entered the playoffs as the No. 2 seed and a 12-5-2 overall record, with a 5-2-1 tally in Horizon League matches.

Lupenec and his Titans will look ahead to Saturday as Detroit will play at Green Bay at 1:00 p.m.
