Coach Rademacher Schedule Release Interview On TitansTV

DETROIT (9/17/2012) --
Five teams that made the postseason, two programs from the Big Ten, another from the BIG EAST and trips to California and Florida are all on the docket as the 2012-13 schedule is now complete with the announcement of the Titans' non-conference opponents.

“I am really excited for this season,” said head coach Autumn Rademacher, who was awarded a three year contract extension in the offseason. “Just having our returners coming back and thinking about the players we have on our roster with the type of experience as well as some of the kids who did really well their freshman year is great.”

Overall, the non-conference schedule will feature six teams that posted winning records a year ago, three teams that made the 2012 NCAA Tournament – including the Sweet 16 in Penn State – and two that were in the postseason WNIT.

Detroit will prepare for the regular season with a pair of home exhibition games versus Lawrence Tech (Oct. 29) and Marygrove (Nov. 5) before opening the season in Ann Arbor against Michigan on Friday, Nov. 9. The last time UDM visited Michigan –a 2012 NCAA Tournament participant - was in 2010 and it turned out to be one of the biggest wins in Coach Rademacher's first four years as the Titans led from beginning to end in a 67-48 victory over the Wolverines.

“It is huge to be able to go down there,” said Coach Rademacher. “We are very thankful to them for agreeing to have us and coming back here. We are really looking forward to that. We have talked to our girls a lot about that, state pride and what we did two years ago and I know they would like nothing more than to come out with a win.”

The regular season home opener follows on Tuesday, Nov. 13, with Canisius visiting Calihan Hall. Other home non-conference dates on the season include Western Michigan coming to town on Nov. 28, Lourdes on Dec. 10 and Madonna on Dec. 22.

Detroit will make the short trip to Ypsilanti to face local-rival Eastern Michigan on Nov. 18. EMU has made a postseason tournament in each of the last two years (NCAA last season), but the Titans have won their battle with the Eagles over that time frame, including last year's 70-69 overtime triumph.

The Titans first long road trip takes them to Northridge, Calif., as UDM takes part in the Radisson Hotel Chatsworth Thanksgiving Basketball Tournament. The red, white and blue open up the tournament against Penn State on Nov. 23, a team that made the Sweet 16 a year ago and finished the season ranked No. 11/12. Depending on the outcome of that contest, Detroit will either face host Cal State Northridge (a WNIT participant last season) or South Alabama (17-13 in 2011-12).

“We have that scheduling philosophy where we play a lot of competitive teams early. You always walk that fine line of being too hard on them and maybe they lose a little confidence like maybe we did last year, but this is why we play this type of schedule early so we will be prepared for the conference,” added Coach Rademacher.

Other road trips for UDM will see the Titans head to Ohio (Dec. 2), Ball State (Dec. 6) and IPFW (Dec. 18) as well as a New Year's Eve contest at South Florida. The Bulls – who have a Titan alum and former player and coach on their staff in Carrie Banks - were 19-16 last year and made the WNIT advancing to that tournament's Sweet 16.

“We will be bringing in the New Year down in Florida so that will be wonderful for our girls right after Christmas time,” said Coach Rademacher. “We are real excited to go play on a couple of trips and build that team chemistry and have that momentum going into the conference.”

The Horizon League already released the 2012-13 conference schedule a few weeks ago with UDM set to open league play with a championship rematch at Green Bay on Jan 8.

“We did that two years ago where we started out in Wisconsin. They are going to be a real talented team, they always are. They never disappoint every year, but we just hope that now that we know we can compete, we will be ready for them the first time out.”
