Coach Holtz On Titans TV
DETROIT (9/20/2012) -- The Detroit men's lacrosse team has spent the last couple of weeks hitting the practice field as the Titans are deep in training getting ready for the 2013 season.
“We have a new attitude. We are working very hard and we have a very positive attitude at practice right now,” said head coach Matt Holtz. “Some of the freshmen have come in and are doing some great things for us and the returners are doing well too and we are excited for the future.”
Part of the preseason training will include UDM's lone fall tournament as Detroit will join with fellow religious institutions and Division I programs Bellarmine and Notre Dame for a day of competition and community service in Chicago on Oct. 6 at Franciscan Hale High School. Each team will have a pair of scrimmages and all the student-athletes will take part in a clinic for the local Catholic youth lacrosse clubs as well as assist in a community service project with
Big Shoulders and St. Malachy's parish of Chicago.
“It is a big day for Catholic lacrosse in the Midwest,” said Holtz. “It is a great day for our guys to realize that there is more than just what they do on the field as student-athletes. We also want to see where we stack up and see where our freshmen and returners are, and just evaluating what they look like at game speed.”
UDM has utilized the grass playing fields at the James K. Campbell Complex for the most part this fall as the veteran Titans and the newcomers have been working hard, building team chemistry and getting to know each other's games, all in preparation for the spring season.
“We are trying not to do too much too soon. We have simplified everything from what we did last year. We are trying to do fewer things, but do them better,” added Coach Holtz.
Detroit recorded six wins for the second year in a row in 2012, while also making it two-straight years qualifying for the MAAC Tournament. Detroit is set to return 34 members from last year's team, including two-time MAAC LSM of the Year
