Family Fun Night at Calihan Hall for Titan Tip-Off

Directions To Calihan Hall

DETROIT (9/27/2012) -
The rosters are set and the schedules are out so there is only one way to ring in the new college basketball season and that is with the 2012 Titan Tip-Off, scheduled for Oct. 12 at Calihan Hall. The event is FREE and open to all students, alumni and Titan fans.

The evening will get underway with the President's Championship Celebration in the Titan Club Room from 4:30 - 6:00 p.m. All CAL Club and Titan Club members are welcome to come out and usher in the new season with University of Detroit Mercy President Antoine M. Garibaldi, Ph.D. All of those planning on attending must RSVP to Detroit Athletics at (313) 993-1700.

All season ticket holders will also be allowed to pick up their tickets for the upcoming season.

Starting at 5:00 p.m., Titan alumni, fans, staff and students-athletes will get together for an evening of games and festivities as Detroit welcomes back its two postseason basketball teams from a year ago. On hand to fire up the crowd will be Cleveland Cavaliers Hype-Man Ahmaad Crump, who has served as a game host for the Cavaliers for the last seven years and has twice been a host for the NBA All-Star game.

Some of the events on the day will include a faculty-staff skills challenge, a Greek burrito-eating contest a lightning & knockout game among the student-athletes, followed by a slam dunk contest to conclude the festivities. The Pep Band, Cheer Team and DT2 will also all be on hand to help rouse the crowd.

The main showcase of the evening will be the return of the Titans 2012 postseason squads as the men's and women's basketball team take center stage as they excite the crowd with a preview of the upcoming season.

Both teams will begin their NCAA mandated practices following the event on Saturday, Oct. 13. The Detroit men return three starters from a team that won the Horizon League Tournament Championship and reached the NCAA Tournament last season, including one of the top-5 guards in the country in junior Ray McCallum, who has been selected as the preseason Horizon League Player of the Year in numerous publications. The Titan women's team returns eight letterwinners and three starters from last years squad, which reached the WNIT for the first time in school history, including All-Horizon League First Team member and co-Horizon League Newcomer of the Year in sophomore Shareta Brown along the League's Sixth Player of the Year in senior Yar Shayok.

More information will be coming, but fans, mark that calendar now because you don't want to miss out on all the action.
